UPS to apply surcharges to residential packages after costs surge

(Reuters) - United Parcel Service Inc (UPS.N) said on Tuesday it will start applying surcharges for residential packages this year after its costs soared during the recent disappointing holiday season.

UPS also reported that fourth-quarter profit fell from a year ago but forecast earnings within the range of estimates.

UPS, the world's largest package delivery company, warned in late January it would report a fourth-quarter profit below its forecast and market expectations.

The Atlanta-based company had mobilized more workers and equipment for an anticipated surge in holiday packages, but the extra business failed to materialize. The additional costs primarily affected the company's domestic ground package unit.

Hello Fedex!

Funny.. my UPS guy was groaning about how hard he had been working over the Christmas season because of online shopping. Busy as anything.
Of course, these are UNION people.. they really get some sweet deals. My nephew just started working for UPS and he says they get overtime for anything over FIVE HOURS per day.
You read that right. Five hours.
Maybe these folks need some reality therapy.
I don't use UPS anymore anyway. They hassled the crap out of me the last time I tried to ship something, so I took my package and my butt right out the door.
I now have an account with Fedex, and it's pretty easy to ship something.

Gas is down... so I do not understand what their point is.

The clincher is that profits are only down per their "predictions". So even if they did better than last year they will still claim a loss.

Its the standard way of ripping people off .

They are saving big dollars because fuel is down but they raise prices,it's all about greed.

Ok so gas prices go down dramatically and UPS is saying their cost is going up ?

online sales are going up but most retailers and stores are using fedex due to the lower price.

Fedex is way cheaper and the reason being is that Fedex is non union.

It sounds like a poor business strategy decision that we're now going to pay for., and pay for and...

3:00....

I worked at the Salisbury UPS and I can tell you that part time package handlers don't get overtime unless it's during the peak season and that is only if you go over 40 hrs for the week. Even then it almost never happens. During the rest of the year you don't get close to 40 hrs it averages about 18 hrs per week. The managers make sure you get as few hours as possible and they are always looking for ways to cut the payroll. I honestly think if people knew what goes on in those facilities and how that stuff gets handled they would go out of business in a year. These recent videos of drivers throwing boxes and all the other stuff is not isolated.

Please tell me that a drone didn't deliver a package to my house today. All indications are that one did.

UPS prefers to deliver to business. It is more profitable and easier. they have charged more for home delivery for some time.We like our drivers but we send everything we can by USPS.
