Md. Senate Oks Speed Limit Boost To 70 On State Highways

The Maryland Senate has voted to raise the speed limit from 65 to 70 mph on state highways.

The Senate voted 39-7 for the measure on Thursday.

Senate approval marks a milestone for the bill, which passed the House of Delegates last year, but stalled in a Senate committee. A similar bill is pending in the House this year.

The National Maximun speed limit of 55MPH was made law in 1974.

That law reflected what was considered safe driving for the roads and vehicles of that era.

Today cars are far more advanced. Now we have better breaking, traction control, and more modern suspension and our cars can handle 70 with ease. Also consider the safety features like airbags and even on the later models the collision detection.

I am not much of a speeder but I can easily look down and catch myself doing 75 MPH and never even noticed it by the way my car handles.

Really modern cars can handle 80 safely.

They will never raise the speed limit on Rt. 50. How else are the state police supposed to make money?

Please put it in the Bill Carl Anderton.

They going to start a fund for all the people that will die from this
speed increase? to pay funeral costs?
This is really stupid.
Plus burning more fuel.

The rationale for the 55 limit was the energy crisis brought on by OPEC squeezing supplies. Theory, such as it was, was to save gas.

Interstates were designed for higher speeds. PA Turnpike opened in the 30s without a limit although one was placed a few years later. When 55 was imposed, Ohio Pike was 75 and PA Pike was 65.

Had a car with a genuine 5th overdrive gear; couldn't run in 5th at 55; in 4th it was much less efficient at 55.

Engines and suspensions and brakes are much superior today.

You are correct however it was a fad for Congress to make this law at the time. This was an era where they extended their power by denying the states Federal funding if they didn't comply.

F the feds raise the state gas tax 1,,penny.

I do not agree. Studies have shown that the lower the speed in an accident, the greater chance for people living. Also - I learned a long time ago that "speeding" doesn't really get you to where you are going all that faster. Maybe 30 seconds, 45 seconds. This will just give speeders justification to go 75 thinking the police will give them the "5 mile over the limit" break. What's next? 100 mph?

No, that law was passed by Nixon to conserve energy, since there was a supposed gas shortage.

Before that the speed limit on 50 was 60mph.

This means Jake Day will be doing 90 mph, keep out of his way if you value your life.....remember his previous speeding record?

Buy a moped.

So...? What are you cop get a life.

Good God - most of the idiots on 50 can't drive adequately at 60. Even tho' they all think they are incarnations of Speed Racer. I don't care if the stupid rednecks and city schmucks going to the beach all kill each other. But they always have to to run in to innocent people. Not a good idea.

"Really modern cars can handle 80 safely." So what? A hell of a lot of people can't afford new cars. And just because you have the $$ to buy a fancy new rocketsled doesn't mean you know how to drive the damn thing.
