Md. bill would lower drinking age for service members

WASHINGTON – Maryland lawmakers want to lower the legal drinking age for members of the military and the bill has support from veterans.

“If he’s eligible to be in the military and dodge bullets, he should be able to take a beer now and then,” says Hugh Warner, commander of VFW Post 3285 in Frederick, Maryland.

Warner supports a Maryland bill that would allow active duty service members who are between the ages of 18 to 21 to consume beer and wine at bars and restaurants in the state.

I support this with one caveat, if they are found guilty of DUI/DWI while drinking as an active duty service member under the age of 21, they get discharged automatically. Special privileges should also receive special discipline.

Absolutely lower the drinking age for active duty military members, but perhaps only "on base".

956-That's typically how a DWI/DUI is handled in the military. Hell, a good friend of mine is a Commander in the Navy. His son, a recent enlistee in the Navy, was discharged. No special favors for DWI/DUI in the military these days.

If you can spill blood for your country then you should be able to have a damn beer, if not RAISE the age of service to 21???????

I DO NOT SUPPORT THIS!!!!!!!!

How is this fair to all citizens? Whatever rights you want to pass onto people great, but you need to apply them equally across the board. You idiots are ready to push this through without even realizing that it creates a sub-classification for ACTIVE SERVICE MEMEBERS O N L Y !!!!! Not all 18 year olds.

Either we are equal or we are not. I am fine with either but make it clear how we are going to operate going forward. And tell me which line doesn't lead to the showers.

Guess I was lucky. I joined the service at 17 years old. The drinking age and voting age were both 18 At that time.

Let them drink on base at 18

Yes! I agree! Stay on base ! They can walk to their barracks to sleep or get a ride from MP's.

What?! lol.

FYI, 18yo's in the military are more disciplined than your average man-child on the street.

I guess you would want all civilian 18yo's to be able to operate the weapons and machinery also?

If he/she has EARNED the right to wear the uniform, then by God I will buy them a beer myself.

They wrote a check that included their lives if necessary. Which kid do you know has done the same thing?

Equal my ass.
