BALTIMORE —Health insurance company Anthem said 80 million of its customers may have had their personal information stolen by hackers, and thousands of Marylanders could be affected.
Anthem said it was a sophisticated hack job that is already being called one of the largest data breaches of a company. Anthem is investigating with the help of the FBI.
The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene confirmed Thursday night that about 272,000 Marylanders are enrolled in Medicaid through a provider that's affiliated with Anthem; however, state health officials said they don't know if anybody's sensitive information has been compromised.
Anthem said it believes the names, addresses, birth dates and Social Security numbers of up to 80 million current and former members may have been accessed.
