Main St Gym Boxers in Glen Burnie

On Friday evening boxers from the Main St Gym competed at the well-known Michael’s Eighth Avenue Ballroom in Glenn Bernie MD. The event hosted by Jake Smith of Baltimore Boxing in conjunction with Michael’s Eighth Ave. had a large crowd on hand for the night of amateur boxing.

Main Street Gym boxers Renaldo Messidue, a 15 yr. old student at Wi Hi, stepped into the ring as a new boxer after his debut 2 months ago. In a hard fought battle Messidue took as well as he gave to outpoint his 16yr. old heavyweight opponent out of the First Class Boxing Gym. Messidue has been undefeated in his first 2 bouts.

Main St Gym’s Erick Acosta, an 11yr. old who attends Fruitland Intermediate School stepped into the ring with a familiar opponent in Tommy Coe, of Baltimore, fighting out the Baltimore Boxing Gym. The two boys who fight in the 85lb division met twice before with Acosta loosing a close decision in the first meeting, and a controversial decision here in Salisbury on the Main St Gym’s Guns & Hoses Show in December. On that night many felt Acosta out boxed Coe in their three round match up, but the judges saw it differently.

On the Friday evening Acosta took charge quickly to insure there would be no more close decisions. Acosta turned in the best performance of his 15-fight career, winning all three rounds on all the judges’ scorecards.

The third member of the Main St Team stepping into the ring knowing that he was taking a big step up in competition, as Cory Moore a senior at Wi Hi matched up with Baltimore’s Mack Allison out of UMAR Boxing, who was celebrating his 100th amateur fight, a milestone few amateurs reach. Allison was a multiple winner of The fight unfolded slowly as both fighters were cautious in the first 2 rounds. In round three Moore started the round quickly going in hard to land some quality shots, but Allison started taking control in the last part of the round. Allison’s hand was raised in victory but Moore kept the fight close enough the crowd had to waited for the official decision.

“ It was a good night for us” said Coach Hal Chernoff of the Main St Gym, “Nardo”(Mesedieu) did so well for such a new boxer in front of a big crowd. He kept his composure when he got caught and fired back with good shots that backed up a bigger guy. He also took advantage of situations when he saw opportunities and that is difficult to do at this stage of his career”. With Corey we knew it was an uphill battle going in against a national champions like Allison, but Corey just seems to be able to hang with who ever he steps in with, but is still working on that little extra he needs to win at the top level. I was happy with his performance and I think he was too, but when it was over I think he saw where just a little more could have gotten him a win and he had it in him to give” said Chernoff. “But if this night belonged to anyone it would have to be Erick. I knew he had that kind of performance in him and everyone in the gym knew it but I don’t think he believed in his own abilities enough to let it go. The first loss to Coe bothered Erick because there was no question he had an edge on the skills side in the ring. The second loss had Erick fighting closer to what he was capable of and he saw where many felt he should have won. So I think part of this was him just being fed up with loosing to someone that may have been more determined but with less skills. This time he just went out used his speed to land combinations then move right or left leaving no chance of getting caught. This night he did much more of that and did it for the entire fight. He amazed the crowd the judges, even the ring doctors couldn’t stop talking about him. For the rest of the night he could move without people complimenting him on an very sharp performance for such a young fighter. It really was his night and I hope he turned a corned and takes it to the next level.”
