Jesus painting, Removed From School, Now On Lit Sign

NEW CONCORD, Ohio — Almost a year after a painting of Jesus was removed from a high school here, a sign showing the same image is on private property in view of the school.

The sign was finished Tuesday. It is lit from within, so it can be seen at night, said Jeanette Moll, a Zanesville, Ohio, lawyer who helped organize the effort to get the sign.

The image is the same as that of the Good Shepherd painting, which depicts Jesus in a field of lambs, that came under fire last year after a senior John Glenn High School in this town of 1,700 people about 70 miles east of Columbus, Ohio, asked for it to be taken down.

"We're excited to have this piece of our own history back up," Moll said.

The painting had been hanging in the school office since 1971, donated as a memorial to former English teacher Margaret Barnett, but the American Civil Liberties Union sent district officials a letter telling them they had to remove the painting by law.

Psalms is an Old Testament book. It was written well before the birth of Jesus Christ. The 23rd Psalm specifically is about the Lord (Father of Jesus Christ) looking after the flock.

It is a writing for Hebrew people and is an expression of their belief in the Father (YHWH) who will protect them.

It is somewhat unusual or strange to associate the Psalm 23 with Jesus Christ. Once He was born and died for our sins, it is HE who looks after us, not his Father.
