Consultant: Rename Texas fire department to reflect EMS

About 80 percent of the calls are medical, and rebranding the department to reflect that can break down artificial barriers between EMS and fire, a city-hired firm said

This is what the City of Salisbury should do.

Salisbury Emergency Medical Services. This is no longer a Fire Department.

Look at all those EMS calls. The best thing that could happen in this county is for the County to take over ALL EMS calls in Wicomico County.

I'm not saying that I think that it's an all together bad idea but you do realize that it would actually cost the county more money than they already pay the FDs to do this right?

You realize that all the ambulances in Wicomico county are owned by the FDs that they are in and not by the county. Since this county has over 100,000 people (2010 Census) they would need at least 8-10 (plus 2-3 spares for when units go down for service)paramedic units stationed around the county to handle the over 15,000 EMS calls that this county receives each year. So that is 8-10 $180,000 F-450 Type I ambulances that the county would have to buy. Then they would have to pay the $100,000 to equip each ambulance. Now yes the current county appropriation that goes to each company would be just enough to pay for the salaries, retirement, healthcare, and work-comp for the employees, but nothing. Then the county would have to pay to maintain those units as well.

Yes I do believe that it may be a good idea in theory but it's no where near as cheap as most of you think it will be.

I believe your intent is honorable, but you really don't know what you are talking about. It can be done efficiently and effectively. And most importantly it can be done with leadership and quality assurance which is not being done now.

Those ambulances are bought with grant funding from the County so the County actually owns those ambulances by default. If the county stopped doling out free money how long do you think those fire departments would stay in business.

That's funny my department just bought an ambulance last year without ANY grant money from the county. I would know, I was on the ambulance purchasing committee. Our treasurer pulled the money from a CD to the tune of $184,000.

Please tell me again how you know so much more than I do.

So you expect the county to stop giving money to the FDs?

Oh by the way my department averages over $20,000 each month in ambulance billing, $30,000 each year in ambulance susbscriptions, $15,000 each year in fire donations and $100,000 each year in fundraisers. Every piece of equipment in our station is completely paid for. We pay an average of $25,000 each month in bills and pay $120,000 each year for our paramedics. Not that we'd have much money left for anything else but yes we make enough money to be self sufficient.
