Political Push For Raw, Unpasteurized Milk Is Increasing Access, But Illnesses Are Up, Too

An alliance of food activists and anti-regulation libertarians is battling to legalize raw, unpasteurized milk, despite warnings from health officials about the rising toll of illnesses affecting adults and children alike.

As the popularity of raw milk has grown, so too have associated outbreaks. They have nearly doubled over the past five years, with eight out of 10 cases occurring in states that have legalized sales of the unpasteurized product, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. Public health officials have also documented how pathogens in raw milk have produced kidney failure in more than a dozen cases and paralysis in at least two.

But distrust of government and a thirst for the milk have helped fuel the movement to do away with federal and state restrictions despite the warnings. In states where raw milk remains banned, black and “gray” markets have emerged for enthusiasts seeking “moonshine milk” in the belief that bacteria-killing heat from pasteurization also kills powerful enzymes and eliminates other properties that can cure allergies, asthma and even autism.

Okay so the illnesses are up, but proportionally foodborne illness resulting from pasteurized milk is still much more of a risk.

It is really good to see all of these mini-rebellions succeeding!

We need to severely reduce the amount of government intervention....repeal the laws of stupidity and let nature take its' course.

I seriously miss unpasteurized cheese.I can no longer even order it from Canada because of some kind of agreement they have with the US.

How in the world did my grandparents survive all those years on raw milk? Oh, and all the generations before? Good thing the government stepped in and regulated all the "bad stuff" so we are safer. (sarcasm off)
The sheep talking back tend to irritate big brother, huh?

11:57-I assume your grandparents are still alive.If they are not,then they didn't survive on raw milk.

@12:52
Alive and quite well into their late 80's.
It's as though the government believes they are the only ones capable of monitoring our well-being. There are plenty of us left who can manage, with intelligent research,to feed our families without government help or input. Guess they will be in my garden and hen house next...

Joel Salatin is a farmer in VA that is very vocal on the absurdity of the current system in place and that. I just listened to a 3 hour podcast he did with Joe Rogan, all of it packed with interesting views.

One interesting point I took from this is that we are not working with the land responsibly. Instead we are forcing the production of all of our food through very unscrupulous means. Basically we have killed our soil using these methods. He also talks about gardening and he has some very inspiring ideas.

He has his argument together.
