Salisbury Police Department Makes "Huge" Mistake

I say "Huge" because most of the Salisbury Police Officers trying to actually FIT into this vehicle simply cannot do so. Many Officers are banging up and bruising their knees because they just can't get in.

Remember now, these vehicles are loaded with all kinds of extra equipment as well and Mayor Ireton and Chief Duncan have ordered a FLEET of these tiny GM vehicles.

There are times when saving gas simply doesn't work. Trying to fit someone you've just arrested is also a major challenge. If an Officer is 5-10 or taller, forget it, they just aren't going to easily get in and out of these vehicles.

Once again your Salisbury Leadership has made a HUGE mistake at taxpayer expense.

There are many things they need to take into consideration before they buy these vehicles. I guess someone didn't do their homework. I bet there is not an officer with the SPD that is under 200 pounds. I don't say that as an insult or to say that they are fat. With all the things they have to wear it adds bulk and weight to them. Guns, flashlights, bullet proof vests and what ever else they wear. This compact vehicles along with all the other equipment inside the vehicle just doesn't allow for enough room.

What vehicle would you have recommended in the wake of Crown Vic's disappearance?

get them on Bikes and loose some weight.

When we have a bunch of jackasses running things, this is what we get.

they should have gone to the dodge chargers or tahoes. besides being too small, you never buy the first model year of a new car. you wait until the bugs are worked out. im 6'00 and under 200lbs, but barely fit in the thing. time will tell if these things hold up or not to daily use.

Getting out is a whole lot more important than getting in.

We made a huge mistake (collectively) by reelecting this batch!

good thing most of them have a napoleon complex.

1:41 really? so it doesn't matter that it takes them 5 minutes to maneuver to get into the car, delaying them to responding to the rapist/robber/murderer in your house?
I think time is important both ways.

I can't believe this is even being discussed. If it was a Smart car or a Prius, maybe I could understand. And Annie, if it takes any officer anywhere near 5 MINUTES to enter or exit a vehicle, I would assume that they are physically disabled and I would wonder why they are patrolling in the first place.

Back injuries are the number one factor in the loss of police officers. Constantly in and out of any vehicle in demand if their job causes early back problems. Anything their department or any department at that can do to lower this would be a plus. Youd he surprised how cramped it is in what civilians would consider "roomy" nowadays. Your gas hogs such as SUVs which are costly are a preference but there has to be other options. There was a private company that was creating police specific vehicles a few years back but the funding dwindled when the big hitters offered deals on newer vehicles in return for continued business. It really sucks that something often over looked can be a huge issue.

anonymous 12:53, the Impala would have been a much better choice.

2:25 Actually, it doesn't... as 911 will only be called AFTER I have dealt with the intruder.

Anonymous said...

such a cute little car, did jimmy pick them out?

Unknown said...

What model is it, anyway? I thought they were going to Impalas.

hey pat whats up,....Haggis.

Actually if that's the caprice it's the same car Msp is using. The charger has no trunk so the Chevy is the best choice. There aren't anymore big cars out there. Oh and the car has been around for many years in Australia so it's a well proven design. Anyone of you know nothings have any other questions?

1:08,right on!Its like a Simpsons episode.

3:06, you did not get my point, at all, but thanks for you useless comeback.

2:25-You've obviously never had a perp with an assault rifle running at your patrol car blasting away at you while you couldn't get out. That's a terrible feeling.

7:49,
I fail to understand your point and why it is directed at me, when I was supporting the LE comment about difficulty getting in and out of the (new) vehicle.
I do not recall nor see where I made any direct inference as to it being the LE's fault.
Did any of you learn comprehension when you were in reading class?

Anonymous said...

When has there been a perp with an assault rifle blasting away at police locally? 7:49 has this happened to you?

Shouldn't they lose weight? I actually think those cars look cool.

Ford screwed up getting rid of the Crown Vic.

I have a hard time agreeing with the Tahoe, but if you can get them for the same price I am all for it. That way you have a vehicle that fits and you have a 4x4 during blizzards and storms so you don't have to rob the fire department and public works of their 4x4's which has happened and is wrong. I was going to say the resale of 4x4's are better, but when did the mayor and council ever worry about a resale value of any vehicle. I still find it hard to believe that Tahoe's are being bought at the same price as cars. I think the sheriff's officer were claiming they were a better buy??

No you made a mistake by not electing Joe and re-electing Debbie Campbell. Electing little boy Jake Day was a big mistake.

One is on a bike and I saw him out and about during the election with his girlfriend supporting Ireton for Mayor.

look at the fuel mileage. I heard they get from 10-12. Crown vic's were getting around 20.

Um....now someone is going to want to ban assault rifles because of you idiotic comment. When was the last time you or anyone in Salisbury has been chased with an assault rifle? Are you dreaming about living in Los Angeles years ago in 1987 when those clowns robbed a bank and overpowered the LAPD?

Anonymous said...

8:58-Yes,in Philly, but a tight vehicle wasn't the issue.Getting out wasn't an option because I had the engine block between he and I to absorb the bullets.I raised my head up just enough to see where he was shooting from and floored it.I managed to hit him hard enough to knock the rifle out of his hands, after which I arrested him.

LOL Crown vics don't even get 20mpg downhill. God forbid SPD tries to save some taxpayer dollars. Can anyone do anything right Joe?

JoeAlbero said...

anonymous 7:04, IS THAT ALL YOU'VE GOT!

The MAYOR of Salisbury can't get in and out of these vehicles, especially if he had all the equipment on Officers have to wear.

It is UNSAFE! If an Officer gets in an accident, what do you think is going to happen to their legs????

Your a moron for making such a comment but I hope it makes you feel better inside.

The huge mistake was hiring Ms Duncan it's been down hill since day one.

JoeAlbero said...

anonymous 7:50, I respectfully disagree. Remember who was in her job beforehand, Chief Webster. He screwed up the City and if anyone thing someone could have come in and made an immediate change, your wrong.

That being said, again, it is my belief a mistake was made purchasing these vehicles. Mind you, Mayor Ireton runs the Police Department, (agree with me or not, it's true). My guess is that Ireton said, this is how much money you have to spend and Duncan, (more than likely) had no choice.

I'm sure she felt it would be better to have a new fleet of cars than the crap they currently have.

FUNNY how the Fire Department has some 14 chase vehicle, many of them large SUV's and even TAKE HOME VEHICLES while the SPD only has around 14 Police Cars that are used 24-7. Ireton is a complete IDIOT and the taxpayers should be up in arms about this whole thing.

If Webster was still chief those cameras would still be facing your building. The thieves would have been caught taking your a/c units. :)

7:04. I have driven several crown vic's. I have gotten an average of 20 MPG. the highest MPG was a 2004 which averaged 22 MPG.
