Disorderly Man Taken into Custody Causes Large Crowd

Joseph Tyrice Cromartie
On June 9, 2013, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Ocean City police were on uniformed bicycle patrol near 5th Street and the Boardwalk when officers observed two males pushing and arguing with one another causing a very large crowd to gather. Officers attempted to separate the two males; however, one of the suspects, who was later identified as Joseph Tyrice Cromartie, 20, of Clinton, MD, became combative and assaulted the officers. One of the officers used his Electronic Control Device (Taser) to subdue Cromartie, who was eventually arrested.

By that time, the large crowd which had gathered at the scene began acting in a disorderly, aggressive manner, taunting and making threatening statements towards officers. Additional officers responded to the scene, including K-9 and mounted patrols, Worcester County Sheriff’s Deputies and Maryland State Police Troopers. The crowd was quickly dispersed and order was restored to the area.

Per OCPD policy, Cromartie was transported by Ocean City EMS to Atlantic General Hospital for examination as a result of the use of the ECD/Taser device. He was shortly released to OCPD with no injuries.

Cromartie was charged by Ocean City Police with two counts of second degree assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct, failure to obey law enforcement and resisting arrest. Cromartie was seen by an Ocean City District Court Commissioner and was released on his own recognizance.

No officers were injured during this incident.

We were in O.C. this weekend. The crowds were very "un-family like". It looked mostly like gangsters just released from jail. It surely was stupidity running rampid.

We frankly did not even go to the boardwalk after dark because of this. It is sad.

I really do not want my 9 and 11 year old girls looking at idiots with their pants half down and boxers hanging out. Are these people so stupid that we need a law that says your pants need to be pulled up.

I wish those people from D.C. and Jersey would stay in their own places!

Ocean City is on the edge of losing control of what used to be considered a "family vacation" spot. I too was in OC for the airshow and was alarmed at the number of "gangsters" roaming the boardwalk in broad daylight...I can only imagine was it was like after dark. Read the posted reports...view the subjects...and make an assumption based on the facts. PC's not required to see the people involved. Drugs, fights, guns, and stabbings. Ocean City better straighten up or kiss ther asses good bye!

Did Zayzay have a background check and take a class to possess the gun he was packing. If so why not.

Another reason I avoid OC. What the hell are they doing at a beach anyway? Get a tan?

OC has not been a 'family vacation friendly' spot for decades. They are just not as good as hiding it now.

The commissioner should be smacked for turning him loose. What a butthead!!

Anybody want to guess why the last Chief got out of Dodge? What a shame that OC has allowed itself to be turned into a ghetto!

My 14-year old son and I were in OC this past Sunday for the OC Airshow and as has been already mentioned, I was also shocked at the number of "gangsters" roaming the boardwalk in broad daylight. I've lived on the shore for more than 20-years and have always enjoyed taking our children to the boardwalk for an evening at the beach and never recall seeing what I saw this past Sunday. It was not a friendly environment.

My relative, wife and small children were also in OC this past weekend. Early one morning just at daylight he decided to go and get some donuts. Walked about a block and turned around and got in the car and drove after seeing what was roaming the streets even so early in the morning.

Local land owners want to end the family atmosphere on the boardwalk so they can make way for casino's on the boardwalk.

I think it's a couple reasons why it was extra gangster this past weekend. 1. OC car show. 2. The jersey shore is still recovering, so the New Jersey / Philly crowd will be in higher numbers.
