Salisbury Approves $262K Grant For New Skate Park

SALISBURY – After six long years, the City Council has approved a grant to begin the process for a modern skate park facility to be constructed in Salisbury.

According to Community Development Director Deborah Stam the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has informed the city the Community Parks and Playgrounds (CP&P) grant application in the amount of $262,000 for Phase 1 of the Salisbury Skatepark has been officially approved by the State Board of Public Works.

“Finally, after six long years of hard work, determination and perseverance, we are ready to move forward with this long-awaited project,” Stam said.

Stam furthered, the Salisbury skate park will be a poured-in-place concrete structure and it will be put out to bid as a design-build contract, so that the designer and the construction contractor are working together every step of the way. The design process will include planning sessions with local skateboarders and general public to ensure the best final product.

Looks like another job for Gillis construction?

I'm glad people think that a city who can't even afford to hire more police officers can afford $262 K for PHASE 1! of a skate park, I will never vote for anyone on that city council again. Let those parents and those who want it spend on such frivilous things, not us tax payers.

What is the additional liability insurance cost for the City?

JoeAlbero said...

anonymous 9:40, the cost is minimal. Many people believe such insurance is expensive but its not.

Mind you, I firmly disagree with the location, for the record. I think what Ireton and Day are doing to the surrounding properties when there are still great options is almost criminal. I see a lawsuit in the making, perhaps several.

I think we need the streets repaved more than a skatepark. just saying.

Earlier I saw a food truck parked in front of the future park, driver scoping it out.The one I saw is the one that sells sandwiches, etc.Ice cream trucks will also be there in force.Things are changing around here really fast.My initial impression was that SBY despised change.Boy was I wrong.

What's Ms Shield's position on this? I hope she is dead set against it. The city should not spend a cent on any thing esp recreation that isn't used proportionally (by population) by the African American community.

I think Cohen and Spies are the only ones on the council that have any common sense. Fake. Day being the yes man. Shields is just a waste of space. A homosexual mayor that is just a waste of $20,000 a year. That is a horrible location.

Where is this going to be located?

It is good to see the sometimes "free money wasting" city council spend something on the young & young at heart in the city for a change! When we watched the city drop a cool $1,000,000.00 on a fire boat that as of now hasn't pumped the first ounce of water on a fire saving not a dime of property or a life one. I for one questioned these kids are indeed a large part of the next set of potential "lost kids" why not invest some of this "free money" in them? Anyone with a kid from 6 yrs. old to 18 and beyond to the young at heart knows the numbers of citizens served by this facility will be considerable and the users will surprise voters with their desire to take ownership of the project, keep it clean and self police it to warn off those that don't want to follow the rules! Objections raised against the project are just a result of those that "Google" to much and harken back to the substandard park built by a less than enthusiastic Wicomico County parks & recreation director who still runs the department whose assets consist of a few sliding boards, swing sets & under used ball fields and innovation is accommodating such new sports as slow pitch softball & soccer! Missing the faster growing and ever evolving X-Games Sports such as Dew Tour Sports that have brought $ Millions $ to the coffers of Ocean City for one. Incidentally when approached by Salisbury Skatepark committee members athletes enthusiastically offered advice, demonstrations for kids, fundraiser support for the ongoing operation and dollars required for the 2nd phase of construction!

The skatepark will be built, but not without the loud objections of the detractors and even those with legitimate concerns, so skaters be good ambassadors for the sport, get involved and help to make the finished product and the citizens that use the facility something Salisbury so desperately needs, something to be proud of!

Have you taken care of the police yet? They are still understaffed. Public Safety before parks please!

I feel sorry for the property owners on S. Park Drive where it is being placed. I wouldn.t want this element near my home, for many reasons.

So now you know where you can get pills and small bags of weed.

Yes we do know where from a Salisbury businessman, local doctors and medical professionals. Name one person in Wicomico county who has been identified as part of the skateboard community who's been arrested for these crimes? Sure some skateboarders do drugs ,but for the most part it's not an element that hangs out at a skatepark. I'm more worried about the adult males that have cruised the N. Park & S. Park Drive areas soliciting people for homosexual activity than I am kids in the skatepark attempting to do anything illegal.

If you recall, we once had one of these. A perfect waste of money. It should go toward the paint used in "building" the bike paths. (they aren't actually built.just a line painted on the roadway.)

how come the council can change the zoning application to properties without notifying the owners?

I think the property owners should have a say on this skate park on whether they wanted it to go in their. Thr city council make up the rules as they go along same thing obama did with the obamacare

They should at least lower their property taxes after ruining a residential neighborhood.

12:15. yeah. so many more kids skate than play soccer , softball , baseball and lacrosse

you need remedial math

I noticed that the houses on the other side of the street are all up for sale.I guess that now that the skate park is a sure thing they anticipate their property value to skyrocket.Having a godsend like that across the street is a huge asset.
