Maryland Lawmakers Pass Bill Forcing Teachers To Pay Union Fees, Bucking Right To Work Trend

Maryland lawmakers agreed this week to require public school teachers to pay union fees – a move that bolsters the state’s connection to organized labor as others move toward a right-to-work status.

The bill passed Thursday in the General Assembly and is headed to the desk of Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley for signing after Monday, the final day of Maryland’s 2013 legislative session.

The bill is also part of a larger progressive agenda put forth this year by leaders of the Democrat-controlled Assembly that includes the approval of tax increases and one of the toughest gun-control proposals in the country.

Teachers take note. O'Malley did this with the Transportation workers right after the last election. He gave them a bonus during the election then mandated that the workers pay Union Dues after that. I have a friend that was able to dodge this by claiming it violated his religious beliefs. He had to show which religious group he was supporting (Catholic Charities) in order to be exempt. How can this be anything but organized crime?

Everything that should be against the law, Maryland Democrats make it law. However when it comes down to the voters, you can't fix stupid.

I am getting sick and tired of liberal Maryland and American Democrats. Being forced to pay union fees will continue to bring this country down. Please don't be stupid, please start voting for Republicans.

12:45 - All State employees

You're probably right. The person I know worked at the Airport and I wasn't personally aware of how wide the union mandate was. You can't be forced to actually join the union but O'Malley's mandate was that you had to pay the dues to the union bosses anyway. I guess its the Teacher Unions who now get to dip into everyone's paycheck this time. Great bunch you all have in Annapolis.

And all you foolish blind Marylanders. The money state employees give to unions eventually wind up in the DEMOCRATS pockets in the name of campaign donations.

Your tax dollar at work.

People of Maryland are stupid. Plain and simple because they fall for this jack a __ and his lies.

Just last week Salisbury voters voted for a democrat who does everything O'Malley and Obama wants. Up until now your mayor hasn't been touched. Now he has to pay but wait, he teaches at a Catholic school so he will claim them to prevent him from being touched.

This is what you get Salisbury!

who said state employees are smart? well, they're not. for the most part they are liberals who are easily led and believe everything their liberal leaders and associates feed them.
so sad to be so dumb, but we can't fix it. all we can hope for is the younger generation who can't find jobs will see this crap for what it is and make more informed and conservative choices for their future.

The Democrats in Maryland have just become mafia bosses.
This is exactly what they do when they are in bed with Unions.
This is corrupt and unconstitutional.
Look for it to be overturned in appeals court or even Federal court.

Hey, I just realized that, since all taxpaying Marylanders fund teacher salaries, then they will all be putting up the money that goes to Union bosses. Pretty sweet deal. Only those that work in Maryland but live outside of it will be able to avoid this money grab.
