Some Higher Fees For County Rec and Parks Will Start This Summer

The county will charge a late fee of $1 per minute if children are not picked up from the After School Zone program on time, beginning July 1.

The new fee is part of the county’s Department of Recreation and Parks effort to help generate revenue. The After School Zone program is held at the Worcester County Recreation Center in Snow Hill where children learn new skills, sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation and more. They play cooperative games, do arts and crafts projects, celebrate holidays and have other fun activities while learning.

During Tuesday’s meeting, County Commissioner Virgil Shockley questioned how the new fee would work.

Another reason for my kids not to go. We pulled our kids out last year. This description is far from what you get. It's a govt baby sitter service. Our kids under 10 were grouped with teenagers and there was no adult supervision. Our child ended up sitting playing with herself. They say they have college students leading the children In games and crafts. One 19 year old college student to 35 kids ranging from age 5 to 13 is not what I signed my kids up for. Back to camp odyssey my kids will go. Yea it cost three times as much but it's a creative and safe environment for them.

Another prediction come true. More fees, fines, surcharges, and taxes. No way around it since the very people you voted into office because THEY were going to "change'", did the SAME things the guys they replaced were doing. Spending every dime they could get their hands on and then millions more. Keep voting. They are doing a bang up job. Now, pay up. But don't dare insinuate that we need a revolution to change anything (we do).

You are correct. The after school programs are babysitting, not for enrichment. Most kids in it are because the parents aren't home when the kids get out of school. They are presumed to be at work, which is true for many, but not all.

How come the general population is always charged, and always forced, to pay fines if they are late?

If you miss a doctor appt you are charged just as if you were there. If you're late, they charge you.

Sometimes they charge you and then reschedule your appt.

BUT, when we are made to wait for any reason, it's always we're sorry this happened or that happened. Or worse, no apology at all.

They expect us to be on time all the time or pay their fine if not. Or pay fine if we give no notice that we can't make an appt.

But doctors get a free pass if they are late or not there. And I'm sure I am not the only one who has had to wait an hour in waiting room to be called back. And sometime after being called back, to wait even more for someone to show up.

How about a refund of our co-pay if we have one? Gift card. Something.

How are they going to administer this late fee program? Is there going to be a time clock the parents punch in at arrival? Not everyone's watch is set at the same time. It seems like there are too many variables at $1.00 per minute charge. Why not a flat late charge? Again, to me, this seems ill conceived and money-grubbing.

It would go by your appt time and the clock in their office. Most times we have to sign in when we get to office and put time in.

Pretty simple if you ask me.
