Council Majority Stands Against Outdoor New Year’s Bar

A packed house of supporters last night at Town Hall wasn’t enough to swing a divided Berlin Council in favor of an application by The Globe to operate an outside bar during New Year’s Eve.

While Mayor Gee Williams chided opponents of the application on the council for allowing personal feelings to dictate policy, those same opponents reminded the room that the issue has come up twice in the last month and that it is time for the town to move on.

The Globe owner Jennifer Dawicki first approached the council last month with her request to have permission to run a street-side service counter that would include alcohol sales at the 2013 New Year’s Eve ball drop. A similar bar was operated by The Globe at last year’s event, as well as other special events in town throughout the year, with no problems or disturbances noted. But when Dawicki repeated the application this year she was turned down by a 3-2 vote.

Are any other restaurants in Berlin allowed to have an outside bar this year?

This really does not make any sense considering this establishment was allowed this last year without one problem. The council who voted against this request have given half cocked answers as to why they denied the outside bar. They sound dishonest and were maybe given some really "good reason" by other establishment owners to deny the request. Anything a town can do to promote business and tax revenue is their responsiblity and duty.
The one whose main concern was increased profit to the business sounds jealous and then in a feebleminded attempt to inflate his importance instucts the applicant to not bring the request back to the council. What a jerk!

I can understand being fair to the other bars in the area, but my problem is that there was a packed house of supporters, and no dissenting opinions. It's time for elected officials to listen to their constituents, who obviously want this!

They should have allowed the Globe the outdoor bar this year and next year if more restaurants want to do it then do a lottery type of thing.
As 11:33 said there were no dissenting opinions present at the meeting so obviously if in fact some residents are against this then it's not something that's very important to them, otherwise they would have been at the meeting.

Berlin passed the law that allows open drinking in town, why wouldn't they allow someone with a lisense and people paid to make sure each patron is of age to drink? It would add some responcibility and accountability to the event.

BYOB is inviting public intoxication.

I wouldn't even be opposed to the Town leasing space to the bars in Town to set up a bar on the Town's property, if that would make those against it happy. It would be just like Ocean City does during their special events on Town property.
