Watermen Report Crab Shortage

Crabbers are reporting a sharp shortage in their catch this season. With the Fourth of July rush on the crustaceans right around the corner, restaurants are scrambling to cover the demand. Gigi Barnett has more on what’s causing the shortfall.

This is the season for crabs and customers to flood into Jesse Lowers’ Crab Shack and Fish Market in Essex. The customers are coming…the crabs, not so much.

“There’s definitely been a shortage and you have to order crabs early for that reason,” said Lowers.

It irks me to go into a crab house and ask "what are your crabs going for?". You get the usual: Jumbos to for this, large goes for this, mediums are ... (there are no smalls of course some have introduced a new term call "regulars").

On the Bay is the only crab house I am aware of in OC who literally display their uncooked crabs in order to help you make your choice. Bahama Mama's used to grade their crabs by weight but they got so ungodly expensive, that this seems to have evaporated.

Just like gasoline for the car. Theres always a "shortage" when they can milk every last dollar out of any fool willing to pay it.
Just wait until September and have a nice crab feast with cheaper prices. That's what we do.
