Delaware City- Delaware State Police detectives are currently investigating the discovery of a human skull which occurred early yesterday evening.

The investigation began on Sunday (6/24) after detectives were told to respond to Carney’s Point, New Jersey in reference to a New Jersey man who had recovered a human skull in the water off of Pea Patch Island in Delaware City at approximately 6:00 p.m. The man advised detectives that he had gone on his boat to the island with his daughter and her friends in order to go swimming. It was at this time that he located the skull in the water approximately four feet from the shore. He then checked the area for other remains but was unable to locate any. The man then brought the skull back to Carney’s Point, New Jersey with him and contacted the Delaware State Police.

The skull was turned over to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for possible identification. Delaware State Police detectives responded back to Pea Patch Island earlier today (6/25) to conduct a search for other remains, however, none were located.

The investigation is on-going at this time.

During the Civil War Pea Patch Island was a notorious prison for Confederate soldiers. Many died there and I'm not surprised more skulls have not been found.
