WASHINGTON -- The Maryland government will set its sights on raising taxes and cutting spending, as the general assembly begins a 90-day session Wednesday to tackle the $1.6 billion budget gap.
Legislators are looking to every corner of state financial policy to relieve the budget shortfall, particularly some common taxes untouched for decades.
Maryland's 23.5 cents-per-gallon tax on gasoline has been in place for nearly 20 years. Senate President Thomas V. Miller wants to see it raised.
Governor Martin O'Malley may propose spending cuts to public education, boosting college tuition and reducing support to Medicaid providers.

when will people figure out these idiots need to be thrown out?
I will not believe the Governor and the legislators are serious about cutting spending until they cut their own salaries and benefits.
They are a sorry lot that bunch!!

If they are taking a weeks pay from the workers and no COLA for retirees then they should cut their pay and benefits by 50%. That seems reasonable for a 90 day work session. that would be approx. $23,000 (approx. $256.00 pr day) for 90 days with benefits of approx $30,000. That is still more than my retirement check. They are getting approx $43,000 ($511.00 per day) now. That is one hellava compensation while demanding the workers to have days off / salary reduction while the Governor and all other Politians or appointees give up nothing ($0.00). Lets see how serious they are. I want them to walk the walk.
Like all thieving politicians (and Maryland's reputation for graft, bribery, and corruption is famous throughout the country), our "leaders" are quick to find ways for US (we, the people) to give them more money to spend. NEVER do ANY of them cut spending, eliminate crap programs, or intend to suffer at all THEMSELVES. Former military and expert shot
