As a non-incumbent, Mr. Ollinger is running for Wicomico County Executive.

I’ve known Joe for a long time and I do not understand where a lot of the negative criticism comes from on this site. It is clear to me that several posters do not know Joe at all.
One of the biggest concerns I’ve heard about his platform is that he believes the County Executive should select the Board of Ed members. Currently they are selected by the Governor, who typically has more liberal views because that is the way Maryland as a whole typically votes. The Eastern shore is typically votes more conservative. Why would we want the Governor to select our BOE? The other alterative talked about is having board members selected in a general election. Who in their right mind would want to that in this area for a board position? We have enough mudslinging going around as is. Having a general election you are going to lose out on some of the best people for the position simply because they are not politicians and do not want to go through an election. Another negative for the having an election is how many voters will actually know anything about any of the people running other than the fact that they’ve seen yard signs. I rarely know anything about the judges that are up for election and in those cases I don’t vote, but in my younger days I’d select any name that I somewhat recognized. I’d bet the people that could afford the most signs would win.

The main reason I'm supporting Joe is his desire to cut spending and retain the tax cap. Joe knows that this county is spending too much and that taxes are too high here. He wants to keep the revenue cap in place and will make government live within its means.
I'm also becoming more attracted to his idea of the county executive appointing a school board. I wasn't for it at first, but the more I looked into the issue, the more I found myself agreeing with him.
If you want a school board to be accountable, then you need to make them answerable to someone. An election every four years -- one that will be dominated by the teachers' unions -- isn't the answer. There is no evidence that elected school boards in any other location do a decent job. School boards appointed by executives, such as New York's school board, aren't tools of the teachers' unions and are answerable to a boss who is in turn answerable to voters. Joe didn't pick a politically popular stance on this issue, but I think he chose the right one.
He's a fiscal conservative, and I agree with most of his plateform.
Joe was a successful businessman and has a long history of being involved in the community vs a big government bureaucrat.
I would have gone with a different platform (and privately expressed my concerns to Joe), but Joe still has my vote and support.
