Ireton Reacts To Library Decision

“Whether or not the new library project begins next year, in 5 years or in 10 years – the vast majority of stakeholders know that the library should remain in a central downtown location. It is a rarity that a metropolitan area does not have its central/main branch of the library downtown. In the end, the central location downtown has 14,500 Wicomico County residents within a 1 mile radius. The Beaglin Park location has but 5,000 residents within a 1 mile radius. Our proposals to Executive Pollitt still stand, and we will continue the community-wide effort to help build a new library downtown. We respect the decision of the County Executive. We will continue to dialogue with the library board and Executive Pollitt on the proposed 3 downtown locations,” said Mayor Ireton.

I am real tired of see Goverment funded building being located " Downtown" because those buildings are " Suppose to be Downtown". The State office building was located " Downtown" in a effort to " Save Downtown", and because the State building was " Suppose" to be downtown. Well the building was permited to be built with an undersize customer parking lot. Tons of extra money was spent to provide parking on the first floor for employees. It would be a real mess if the Shirt Factories located downtown had not closed. However locating all the State offices, there did not save Downtown. There are few if any retail shops Downtown today.

The MVA office is outside of the Downtown section and nobody seems to really mind that location, that Agency has great parking, easy vehicle access.

The Federal and State Resource Conservation Offices are not in Downtown Salisbury.
Social Security is located in the North of Salisbury

The Health Department was located Downtown to help save "Downtown" and, this is not a user friendly location either. Everybody hates to go there.

I think it would be nice to build the new Library outside of Downtown on a large parcel of land, where it could expand as needed, with good easy access parking. Perhaps develop a campus for all of the Art's. At the same time maintain the building Downtown remodel as needed to suit the needs of the people who still want come to that location.

I believe most of the people who go to the Library drive and these people like myself would rather drive to Beaglin Park be in less traffic area that will not be in a high Crime area at night.

If the Library is located at Beaglin Park, I would probable go in the evenings, something myself and many others do not do at the current location.

i think the plans for another costly building for our COUNTY library need to be abandoned.

Why on earth would anyone consider SPENDING public money right now on ANYTHING?

This sounds criminal to me.

It is obvious that the local governments (County and City) need to STOP spending money

Fine Mayor Ireton but pay for security that will keep the bums and low life nasties from hanging out front so we upstanding citizens can enjoy it for what it supposed to be used for.

Leave it to the one term mayor to want to continue on with something that has been laid to rest for the time being by the county and the library board.
