Keep your eyes on comments though.

I hope the man is OK, and its a shame about his dog... As a fellow dog lover I hate to see this kind of thing happen... But as a pit bull owner, It's on how you raise dogs... And to be honest, the smaller dogs are the most aggressive dogs more so than not...

I am sorry to say but we must wake up and ban this breed of dog. Alot of states and cities have ban this type of dog. It needs to done on a national basis!

worthless, worthless, worthless breed of dogs. Don't hand me this sick message about they are sweet IF you train them "right". BULL. they are killers and should all be exterminated. they are breed for "image", for "posing", and for "fighting" - nothing else. Don't even think about wasting our time defending that breed. You will never, ever change someone's mind.

Anonymous said...

3:13, it's for sure no one will ever change the mind of someone who thinks they know it all already - especially when they're not only wrong, but loud and brash about it.

I've been a breeder for 37 years now, and have raised quite a few dogs myself over the years. For your info, there is NO SUCH THING as a breed of dog that isn't sweet (as you put it) and well behaved when they're raised and trained correctly. Just because a breed is aggressive by nature does not - repeat NOT - mean they can't be trained by someone who knows what the hell they're doing. So now YOU can come back and talk all the "smack" you want to about me or what I just said. I've got nearly 4 decades experience to back up my statement. How many do YOU have? Yeah, just as I thought.

The dog in this post will - and must be - put down if captured. It's too late for him now and for the man's dog that he killed. Everyone loses - the Pit Bull and his two victims here - because some lunkhead either didn't know what he was doing raising this dog or else was just too stupid and / or lazy.

I have seen loving pit bulls and nasty ones. The nasty one are as a result of the owner. There is a certain kind of person that is attracted to the breed because of their reputation. Ask Michael Vick.

ditto
well said! How often do you hear about other dogs mauling someone.

Anonymous said...

3:40, more often than you think; you just don't hear as much about it. Mainstream media is about as unbiased on such things as they are on politics.

anonymous 3:47, oh come on! You know damn well the local MSM will be all over this, they just didn't get it first, as usual. The MSM doesn't cover up stories like this, get a grip.

Timothy and Jennifer Kitchen, of Connersville, Ind., filed an amended complaint Monday on behalf of their son, Micah Daniel Kitchen, against their former neighbor, Janet Williams."

I Googled Poodle attacks and got over a million hits. Beware of dog - BEWARE OF OWNER!

ive seen nice pits and mean pits. ive seen nice shepherds and mean shepherds. ive seen nice chihuahuas and mean ones too. it has to do with how they r raised and genetics. if u leave a dog chained up outside all the time and he gets no human contact other than a couple people of course the dog is going to be vicious whether hes a pit or not.

3:13 you are an uneducated IDIOT. I have three and they sleep in my bed with my family and me. YES, just like half of the parentless kid juveniles on the shore some of them have attitude problems. And the focus is on them because they are breed more on the shore than any other bread. I trust them with my life. I just wouldn’t want to break into my house and threaten my family in anyway, that could get you in trouble. Go back to petting your chawawa!

Anonymous said...

Pits are NOT always mean and nasty, i have had one, and absolutely love the breed - they are loyal & VERY smart dogs! the Owner is what makes the dog mean and nasty, i have a chihuahua that is probably more "nasty" than any pitbull ive ever come into contact with, but people arent banning little ankle biters?

Anonymous said...

Joe, you should know the MSM better than that. They cover what they damn well choose to cover, downplay what they choose to downplay, and sensationalize what they choose to sensationalize. I can think of no stronger example of this than our own beloved Daily Times. If you go by what they say, Mayor Tilghman never did anything wrong and Debbie Campbell hasn't done much right. Now I'd say that's just a LITTLE bit biased.

Also, if you look again at what 3:47 said, it was that MSM wasn't unbiased. And he said that "you don't hear as much about it". That sounds more like downplaying to me than it does covering up.

4:26, THANK YOU...well said and obviously with some intelligence behind it (unlike some other comments here.)

Anonymous said...

My pit boxer is thee most lovable dog I have ever had. When friends come over, he smothers them with kisses. He is highly intelligent and can pick up on my moods quick and will change his moods according to mine.

He has the best world because he has two women fighting over who gets to sleep with him every night.

Most likely this one that mauled was raised on a pit farm and the owner was no less an animal as well.

Uthenize the owner when you find him. Make him stand out in the swamp on a chain with no food in this cold for a week first while you sit in your warm boat and eat a hot meal in front of him.

Somerset animal control in Somerset county (sporting their new uniforms) seem to be more interested in a few strays that run loose and harm no one then they are at controlling these vicious dogs that are trained and used for fighting. No one really needs a pit bull. There are many other breeds that make better pets. No one needs a dog for protection either, get a gun and you will be better off.

Anonymous said...

When asked if my dogs bite, I say do they have teeth? So, yes any breed can and does bite. The pitbull, however, has the physical capability to inflict damage at a scary level. The inbreeding, and breeding for aggression have compounded the problem. There are so very many cases of unforseen attacks by pits that have been raised properly, that there is no way in hell I would ever allow one to live with my family.

Anonymous said...

Well to all you Pit Bull lovers maybe you can give some examples of other breeds of dogs attacking people on Delmarva. I can remember in just this past year of two Pit Bull attacks in the Chincoteague Island area alone am I am willing to bet their have many more Pit Bulls attacks then that!!!

If you go to the CDC's site on dog bite statistics, surprisingly the Rottweiler leads all breeds in amount of bites.
http://www.cdc.gov/HomeandRecreationalSafety/Dog-Bites/dogbite-factsheet.html
I have an American Bulldog, and I vigorously defend him when anyone refers to him as a pit bull. Very different breeds, with a different personality and purpose for each breed. There is a stigma attached to the pit bull, and as the breed has no function other than fighting or as pets, I do not forsee the stigma fading.

Ignorance spreads much faster than knowledge, that is apparent by some of the uneducated opinions on here. Pitbulls are not the monsters they are made out to be. Look at the list of the worst dog breeds and the most likely to attack and you will quickly see that cute little cocker spaniel will attack just as quickly if not quicker than a pitbull will. Let's not even get started on this little chihuahuas.

3:13 you are worthless worthless worthless. Ignorant people like you need to be exterminated!!

Anonymous said...

When I was a kid the one you watched for was Dobermans. They were known for being vicious. Now you never hear about them anymore, it's always the pitbulls. Have Dobermans become less vicious or what?

Anonymous said...

8:34 I'm sorry that person offended you and your stupid pit bull but if the truth hurts that's YOUR problem, isn't it?

Anonymous said...

It is NOT "all in how you raise them". Pit Bulls are DANGEROUS!!

Anonymous said...

I suggest all you nay sayers talk to a vet. They are qualified to tell you that it is both nature and nuture. If momma was loving, than baby will be loving as long as they are treated loving.

Anonymous said...

5:18, why THANK YOU SO MUCH for informing the public of what kind of dog they don't need and also of what they need for protection. Mighty nice of you.

Hmmm...the thought of someone as all knowing as you owning a gun scares me. They're usually the ones who really know the least.

Anonymous said...

11:45, just how many years experience in breeding, training, and raising Pit Bulls are you basing your judgment on? How much training have you had in dog psychology? Or animal behavior in general?

With extremely rare exceptions (which apply to ALL breeds), it IS all in how you raise them.

Anonymous said...

Kill the owner and retrain the dog.

Yo,4:26.... before you go calling someone an idiot, maybe you should learn the English language. Let me correct it for you...
3:13 (I am) an uneducated IDIOT. I have three (American Staffordshire Terriers)and they sleep in my bed with my family and me. YES, just like half of the (un-parented)juveniles on the shore(,) (many dogs) have attitude problems. The focus is on (Pit bulls) because they are (bred) more on the shore than any other (breed). [Not sure how true that is, but I will leave it in there.] I trust (my dogs) with my life. (Like I said, I am an idiot.)I just wouldn’t want to break into my house and threaten my family in anyway, (because that would be a domestic crime and I would be arrested and put behind bars where I belong. But then again, I AM an idiot.) That could get (me) in trouble. Go back to petting your (chihuahua)!
By the way, folks, a pit bull terrier and a staffordshire terrier are two absolutely different dogs. But they look a lot alike. The Staffordshire makes a great pet... and I imagine some of you bozos defending your pits actually have Staffs.

Shit like this makes me sad. Bad pet parenting seems to be the norm here on the shore. I do not know how many tagsless dogs I have rescued and taken to the pound, and the countless times we have been attacked by runaways. I do not know how many neighbors I have reported for not providing shelter and water for their dog, tied up in the back yard to lead a solitary life. Why did you get the dog? New lawn ornament? You ignorant selfish idiots disgust me. I carry mace now when I walk my dog and if we are attacked I will have no problem protecting us, including killing your dog. I have no compassion for people like you. Our neighbors viscious pit got loose 5 times and attacked a man down the block, one time they are to dart it to sleep before they could capture it. Animal control gave them a fine, big deal, they are worthless.

There is no such thing as a responsible pit bull owner.

I would recommend anyone owning or thinking of owning a pitbull to click or copy and paste on the following link from a Florida news story.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-10-02-florida-dogattack_N.htmlink

These were raised as pets by a 42 year old woman since they were puppies. Don't think you can get any aggressive breed dog and raise them like you have all the other dogs you have owned in the past. They require expert cannie training, and a commitment to constant supervision and retraining. Your life and others around you literally depends on it.

The worthless bureaucrats at Somerset Animal Control / Health Department took our dogs life after he was provoked by an uninvited visitor on our property. Our dog was well cared for, trained, and never left home alone. In Crisfield dogs are running loose, or just left chained and barking constantly. You cannot get any action to remedy that. We have moved north and are enjoying the suburbs of Salisbury. We also stopped all plans for a business expansion in Somerset County that would have provided over 40 new jobs over the next five years. If you are a 'come-here' you are not welcome in Crisfield / Somerset county.

Happy up north

Believing that banning Pit Bulls is going to solve this problem is like saying banning Guns is going to solve crime. Guns don't kill people; people kill people. It is the same with this or any other breed. Yes Pit Bulls were bred to fight but it all depends on how they are raised. Pit Bulls are great dogs that have just gotten a bad rep because of their owners. If you raise a Pit Bull as a family dog then most likely you will never have any problems. Any way I am just saying don't blame the breed.

Anonymous said...

All dogs need proper training and socialization, no matter what the breed. Like another said, I've seen good pits and bad ones, hell I've even seen bad Labs as well. Some dogs are just more alpha than others, and it is the owners resposibility to recognize any behavioral issues, and work with the dog.

Anonymous said...

I can understand your frustration 5:30. Somerset county commissioners were well aware of the reputation of James L. Henderson when they hired him for the position of dog control. You say animal control took your dogs life. It really scares me to think that anyone working in dog control is allowed to carry a weapon of any kind. It is well documented that Henderson tortured and abused inmates when he was a warden of SCDC. Somerset county will eventually be faced with a lawsuit if Henderson remains an employee in any capacity.

Anonymous said...

Henderson is a police, want to be. He got the county to buy him a uniform that looks a lot like a state police uniform. If he carries a weapon we are all in trouble. I'm just curious as to what kind of training any one at dog central has in regard to any type of weapon.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Jantizzy, and it's definitely NOT the breed, it's the training. Watch Animal Planet for a week, pit bulls are capable of being sweet dogs just like any dog. Decades ago, they were the most common American dog, like the lab is today! It's ssad a majority of people are completely ignorant and selfish when it comes to dog ownership. It's all about "He's our guard dog". Most people put them out in undersized pens with inadequate shelter, out on chains, or don't give them walks like they need because they are too lazy and selfish to care about what the dog needs and not what they "think" the dog needs.

DPayne said...

first off 11:05 american stafordshire terrier and pit bull terrier are two completely different breeds even though they look similar. a couple years back there was a study done on dog attacks and a top ten list published of dog breeds most likely to bite people, German shepards, cocker spainels, dalmations, chiuauas, and labs topped the list and pit bulls, dobermans, and rottwillers did not make the top ten. I will admit pit bulls have some of the most powerful jaws in the animal kingdom but that does not make them viscious killers. and anyone that doubts that can come spend a week with my pit or any one of several friends that have pits that would never hurt a soul. before banning pit bulls we should think about banning people that are uneducated on the issue and simply believe anything they read. Half of reported pit bull attacks wind up not being pit bulls at all

Crisfield police recently arrested some local residents for raising dogs for the purpose of fighting and animal neglect,I wonder if this incident is related? There are alot of little thugs who have them.

Anonymous said...

How do we even know it was a Pit Bull? Do you know how many attacks are blamed on this breed simply because people believe Pit Bulls are the only dogs that attack people. Here is a link even I failed at....

Can you identify which of these breeds IS A PIT BULL?

bluetojthetotmom, where was the county dog police? Henderson is all dressed up in uniform now with nothing else to do but catch dogs. Why does the CPD have to get involved?
