Mouthwash could protect against COVID-19

Mouthwash has the potential to protect against COVID-19 infection by killing the coronavirus before it can infect human cells, according to a new report.

Coronaviruses belong to the class of 'enveloped viruses', meaning they are covered by a fatty layer that is vulnerable to certain chemicals.

A team of international researchers say mouthwash could destroy the outermost layer or 'envelope' of the virus, preventing its replication in the mouth and throat.

The scientists say there is an urgent need to test the effectiveness of mouthwash in trials, although there is currently no clinical evidence that it would be successful.

'Safe use of mouthwash – as in gargling – has so far not been considered by public health bodies in the UK,' said lead author Professor O’Donnell, co-director of Cardiff University’s Systems Immunity Research Institute.

'In test tube experiments and limited clinical studies, some mouthwashes contain enough of known virucidal ingredients to effectively target lipids in similar enveloped viruses.

'What we don’t know yet is whether existing mouthwashes are active against the lipid membrane of SARS-CoV-2.

Great let's pay a researcher a million dollars when a high school kid could figure this one out. American Dental Association is recommending dentists have patients rinse with 2 percent hydrogen peroxide before dental procedures. This is proven to disrupt the virus. Most sold are 3 percent so dilute. Don't overdo it though with peroxide or any mouthwash. It will also kill the flora needed for good immunity.
Also take the damn mask off after leaving required zones. Masks act as incubators. Replace them frequently. If you can't replace soak in very warm water for 1/2 hr.

If hand washing is effective then gargling is effective.

Yeah right. . .because of the alcohol content

Should I drink it?

Won’t be found on the shelves now. Hoarders will have to throw their toilet paper out to make room for big a-s bottles of mouthwash.

This was not a study! It was a paper written with this as the hypothesis and says it should be studied. There is no proof that the lower alcohol mouth wash will do anything.

If you have to ask then please do drink it. The quicker your gene pool is eliminated the better off the world would become.

Still good hygiene negative Nellie

Just about any chemical in sufficient percentages will destroy a coronavirus. There's a big difference in it happening in a lab setting then on humans. Yes it may help a little but is going to do nothing for the viral load present in the nose and sinus cavity.
Coronavirus researchers have come out of the woodwork all looking for grants to 'study' something many high school students could already tell us.
it has nothing to do with alcohol content. There isn't enough in any mouthwash and is why it is not recommended to use as a hand sanitizer.

Four Leaf Cloves “could” protect against Coronavirus.

Doing a pirouette on the left foot “could” protect against Coronavirus.

Wearing yellow shirt “could” protect against Coronavirus.

Wait. People around here use mouthwash? I mean I have met many that should, but I don't think they do.

Full strength Listerine original works really good as a hand sanitizer.

Liquid Drain cleaner is great. I gave a bottle the homeless guy for his protection. The guy up by Walmart on 13, you know the one who talks to himself. Told him to drink it and it would cure him of his problems.

I wonder if he will?
