Why Are So Many Americans in Prison?

Activist groups claim a biased criminal justice system has put too many people behind bars. The solution, they say, is to drastically cut the prison population. Even now, some states are using the coronavirus pandemic to double down on granting early release to thousands of prisoners. Rafael Mangual, Deputy Director of Legal Policy at the Manhattan Institute, urges caution: most people are in prison for a good reason.

Because America lets them off too easy , treating them too good !!

No Death Penalty enforced < Hell it is a Criminals' Paradise !!!

TIME, that's it !! Like a Retirement Home , all FREE !!!

Prison is more punishment for the ones that have to work there than for
the criminals inside !!! I know, I was a Prison Officer 24 years !!!

POOR SCHOOL EDUCATION

Prisoners got there in almost all circumstances by either pleading guilty, or being convicted by judge or jury. Not that complicated. And the system is aware how much a room at the Graybar Hotel costs so there are often alternatives. But they're behind bars because those options seemed less suited to their case.

So they can keep gov state county employees hired like you. Crooked COs. Entire system benefits from for profit prisons. Thats why period. Nobody cares if you didnt like your job. Should of went to school and established an IQ above 70. Your job was worse then the prisoners being in prison. You went home to your family every night. Many of those prisoners never saw there family again. Locked in cages for petty BS all so you could have a job and then you complain about it. Hows the retirement schmuck.

PRISON IS BIG BUSINESS!! JUST LOOK AT THE RIDICULOUS SALARIES PAID TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT TO FILL THOSE PRISONS

Well, one could start at home life for the incarcerated. Single parent, loitering at night and early morning without supervision; mother or grandmother have no guidance control. By the time they are eventually arrested they have broken the societal boundaries of a civilized society. So, where do we start? Well, in the formative years in kindergarten, deportment should be the primary subject even before ABC's. Do it like Mr. Rogers, nice but directional and instructive. Second is class behavior and interaction by hand raising, not by being the loudest or most disruptive. Most of these actions are tolerated at home. If that is so, then students must be educated that home life may differ from academic life because you are there to learn and one cannot learn if they are talking. Let the students declare who is disrupting the class by a closed vote-note with the problem classmate's name on it. Then the teacher shall take corrective action base on the class majority vote.

We need to be really careful on just which inmates are released some that have been were in for murder and that should be at least a life sentence if not life +. Blue collar crimes would be much more acceptable.

Steal, loose a finger steal again loose a hand, take a life, give a life, etc, etc. Making the punishment fit the crime will surely make society better and lighten the load for our prison system.

It's called the prison industrial complex. Profit is the reason.

@12:14 they pled guilty because they are going to court with a public pretender and have been plastered with so many charges that taking a plea is the only sane thing one can do. Keep right on supporting this corrupt justice system, one day it might be you facing it and you'll enjoy all of the railroading and corruption you support.

99% of all cases do not end in jail time. America is full of criminals and most are let off without anything.

Prison is the first decent home they've ever known. Free Room and board. Latest in technology, fitness center and college. All on our dime. Yet the libutards are taking care of AMERICA.
