Committee Hears Support Behind Special Event Zone Changes; Officials Seek More Tools For Police This Year

OCEAN CITY — The forum was different, but the message was strong and consistent this week as a local delegation testified in Annapolis on proposed legislation strengthening the resort’s motorized special event laws.

Last week, a large contingent from Ocean City testified in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee on Senate Bill 878, which, among other things, adds the offense of exhibition driving to the original legislation approved by state lawmakers two years ago. Less than a week later, many of those same local delegation members testified in the House Environment and Transportation Committee on sister legislation filed in the House by Delegate Wayne Hartman. The message was clear and concise and delivered with passion for the second time in less than a week.

House Bill 1493 would add the offense of exhibition driving to the existing special event zone legislation. According to the bill’s language, among the offenses under the umbrella of exhibition driving are operating a vehicle in a manner that produces abrupt acceleration or deceleration, skidding, swerving, raucous engine noise, gear grinding or wheels losing contact with the ground. For the first time in the evolution of the special event zone legislation, the potential penalties described in the bill include potential jail time. For example, violations could result in a term of imprisonment not exceeding 60 days, or a fine of $1,000 or both.

How many of you have noticed with the hogan declaration of emergency because of the virus, that the PUBLIC is no longer allowed to enter the state buildings. Which means no one other than the sponsors of these Bills {for the remainder of this years session} can testify, which means there are zero testimonies allowed in opposition. This is a direct violation of the States Constitution and the open meetings laws.
The entire mga session should be canceled and/or those legislators participating in this unlawful activity should be prosecuted.
If your not emailing and calling your reps then your just paying them to violate your rights.

JAIL TIME??

I'm no fan of H20, but jail time for squealing tires???

Revving an engine gets you behind bars???

The police in Ocean City are not only some of the shortest cops in the nation, their reputation as goose stepping wanna-be hard rocks is nation-wide, and as an attorney in Ocean city once told me, when people cross the RT 50 bridge, they essentially surrender all Constitutional rights and don't worry about the judges -- they don't recognize them either.
An attorney said that.
Remember the picture of an O.C, cop pointing A RIFLE (!!) at someone in Ocean City last summer??? Ever hear of "downrange" you f'ing idiot??
Again, jail time for squealing tires?? I've done that by accident several times. Not for 30 seconds at a time, but have you EVER seen a cop say, "oh, you didn't mean to turn your tires?? Ok, go on then."
I'm sure the Gestapo in O.C. would let me go.
Why doesn't Ocean city publish HOW MUCH MONEY they took in traffic fines last year?
Because you'd be really pissed, that's why.

jail time. really??

I guess you missed the video of a rice burner squealing wheels and proceeding to run over a pedestrian? Who accidentally squeals wheels anyway. You need remedial driver training.

Ocean City took in exactly $0 in traffic fines.

Ocean City should let Lee Stevens handle this matter. Any man that is comfortable enough with himself to soak in a bath rather than take a shower, and doesn't care who knows about it, will make the right decisions and not care what people think.

So rice burner boy, which one of these freedoms are being taken from you? Is it the squealing wheels, skidding or swerving? Keep crying it makes me laugh!

All traffic fines go to the Maryland general budget, zero dollars go to ocean city or any other municipalities. The only way any of that money would ever be returned to municipalities is via grants. Get your facts straight before you cry about ticket revenue.

All special events should with draw all their event dates in OC and go some where else with their money.

All H20 vehicles should stop at Park And Ride

at that location, they can rent a bycycle to ride in Ocean City

save the trees....ride a bike

Squealing tires and fining people for releasing balloons are the Eastern Shore Delegation's accomplishments, in the mean time we lost our saw mill and the State of Maryland has bought land in fee simple that equals half the size of Wicomico County. Our representatives are completely disengaged from the Rural Agricultural Community. They keep messing with the the golden goose, Ocean City R/E Taxes that subsidized farm land R/E taxes.

1:35 - oh really? An attorney said that to you? Well, who is the attorney who told you this?

....we’ll wait.....

..... crickets......

Uh huh.

Name the attorney and watch the judges take her cases just to shoot her down.

You can't be that stupid.

Maybe you can.

You and "Shadow" (a cop, no doubt, with the bad-ass nickname he gave himself).

Perhaps "squealing tires" was not quite accurate, but many people have "chirped" their tires at intersections with sand or mud or water.
That's "turning the tires" and gets a ticket, too.
That help you out???
