Grandfather charged in girl's cruise ship death says he's colorblind, calls outcome of case "inconsequential"

Salvatore "Sam" Anello, the Indiana man accused of negligent homicide in the death of his granddaughter Chloe Wiegand, said what happens in the criminal investigation is not important because "the worst thing" has already happened. In an exclusive interview with CBS News, Anello spoke for the first time about the moment 18-month-old Wiegand fell from his grasp out of a cruise ship window in Puerto Rico.

"Chloe being gone is the worst thing ever. So I'm like, whatever," Anello said. "There's nothing worse that they could do to me than what's already happened."

Wiegand fell 150 feet from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship docked in Puerto Rico in July. Anello was holding the girl up against what he thought was a bank of closed windows, when she slipped from his grasp. Despite the family's wishes not to pursue charges, Puerto Rican prosecutors have charged him with negligent homicide.

The ship's video tells a different story. He was caught on film doing the dangerous act. He had to stick his grandaughter over a protective rail and OUTSIDE of the window opening when she "fell." The jurors are going to see the video, and have no choice to convict. That man either has no remorse, or just wants to blame it on the cruise line. And for that colorblind BS, I am colorblind and glass has NO COLOR, whether anyone is colorblind, or not. That is the lamest excuse for dropping a small child out of a window that I have ever heard. Now I think he deserves to go to jail for his actions. He was reckless and careless with his grand daughter's life. The cruise line, and his colorblindness had nothing to do with causing her death. He will be much better off with a jury if he, and his lawyer, just keep their mouths shut. The jury might, just might, respond sympathetically to that, and figure the old man had suffered enough. Trying to blame others is going nowhere with a jury, when the video is shown.

Yeah, that was almost the worst thing ever, but trying to blame the cruise line or colorblindness for your actions are even worse. Not only do you want to excuse your responsibility for causing your grand daughter's death, but you want to make money off of your negligence by suing the cruise line. He is a callous cad indeed, and he deserves no sympathy, as evidenced by his comments and actions since her death. Initially one felt sympathy for the old man, but as the facts come out, and he makes up the excuses, he looks like he deserves whatever punishment hell and earth puts on him. He killed the little girl. It's as simple as that.
