Bridgeville Police Department Press Release 11-21-19 (Gas Station Skimmers)

On November 21, 2019, at approximately 0030 hours, a Bridgeville Police Officer observed a vehicle commit two traffic violations. The officer stopped the vehicle and made contact with the two occupants, Salvador Rodriguez Fernandez of Miami, Florida and Yordan Reyna Cardenas of Orlando, Florida. The officer believed that the actions of both individuals were suspicious.

The officer then called for assistance from the Greenwood Police Department. After a consent search of the vehicle, the officers located numerous bank card skimming devices that are used to copy bank cards when swiped. Officers also located numerous tools used to open the gas pumps to install the skimmers.

Both men were charged with numerous offenses and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $42,000 cash bail.

It is believed that numerous gas stations in Kent and Sussex County have been hit with these skimmers. Please remain vigilant when using your bank card at local gas stations.

You're still protected if you use a credit card. But you're screwed if you use a debit card at a gas pump with a skimmer attached. You won't know anything until your money has been withdrawn from your banking account. And you won't get it back, like you do if you credit card has unauthorized use. Debit cards should ONLY be used for obtaining cash from your bank account at an ATM.

Most ATM's and ALL bank ATMs have cameras on them. Not a likely place to find a skimmer. The thieves don't like to ply their trade on film. The're greedy, not stupid.
