Young Assateague Horse Killed By Park Vehicle

ASSATEAGUE — A wild horse on Assateague was struck and killed by a park vehicle early Sunday morning, serving as a grim reminder to motorists to obey speed limits and use caution around the island’s famed residents.

In the predawn hours before first light on Sunday, the chestnut mare N2BHS-ALQ, or Connie’s Girl, was standing in the road on a curve on Bayberry Drive when it was struck by a park vehicle. The park vehicle struck the horse in the hind quarter and the animal did not survive the collision. The park employee was uninjured and the incident is under investigation.

Connie’s Girl was born in April 2018 to Ms. Macky with the likely sire being Yankee. The band frequented the developed area and campgrounds at the Assateague Island National Seashore and Assateague State Park. Connie’s Girl in the 34th wild horse to be hit by a vehicle and killed on the island since 1982. Another 17 horses have been struck and injured.

“As always, the loss of one of our horses saddens park staff,” Assateague Island National Seashore officials said in a statement. “The National Park Service reminds everyone to be alert when driving on Assateague Island, especially at night.”

The homeless shelters will be serving real meat for a change.

Why is it saying the pony was killed by park vehicle instead of Park employee? When people driving cars have accidents, the headline does not read this way.

ANOTHER mishap where no one is at fault. Amazing. Must be democrat.

I want to see the body cam, emails, cell phone communications and I demand indictments on all involved. I want people fired today. We are better then this.

These wild ponies are just like deer, running in the road and some inevitably get hit by vehicles. I don't hear such an uproar with a dead deer on the side of the road. Truly, I feel bad that this pony was killed. But people don't get crucified over hitting any other wild animals. There is no difference.

Sorry for the loss of such a young horse and sorry for the Park's loss.

This is obviously a "Hate" crime motivated by Race. A horse of "Color" was deliberately run over by a white driver! This is Trumps fault, he has caused this senseless murder!
Trump needs to be held accountable for this, he needs to be Inpeached.

This pony attraction has gone on long enough. It would be just as beautiful a place with out them. The herd is plagued with disease and inbreeding and new water born fungal and insect infestations. I know it's cute and touristy and tradition. I have known people that bought them for their teary eyed little girls at Pony Penning then spent a fortune trying to keep them alive. Time to bury the Misty's Myth. Chincoteague fire dept. is outfitted like a small army for small town I don't think they need anything else. They never washed ashore from a Spanish Galleon. Melvin Joseph would have found it. The locals use to hide all their live stock on the island when the tax man came to town. There use to be cows, pigs and sheep too. Time to let it go. We are not talking about wild mustangs here just a miserable herd of mangy fly eaten ponies in the sand and marsh.

Wow. You don't have a clue about what you're talking about. Nothing but mis-information and made up crap. Those ponies have occupied that islands for much longer than any humans. Why don't YOU go somewhere else, and let the ponies be?

Do as I say, not as I do

Been to Assateague Island hundreds of times, not once seen one of those ponies running. They are not like deer. The park employee was speeding or texting

Probably the same idiot who told me to slow down on the beach in my chevy blazer

The driver had to be exceeding the speed limit and not attentive to their driving. They were exceeding the posted speed limit. They should be fired.

Stop telling others to leave their home. What is wrong with you?

People have dominion over the animals.

Period

praying for the day Trump sends that obama appointee currently running assateague to a desk job in a basement in DC. Knows nothing about how to run a park, deal with the public or law enforcement!

Agree whole heartily. I’ve never been so harassed by park employees in the 30+ years I’ve been visiting.

". . . . serving as a grim reminder to motorists to obey speed limits and use caution around the island’s famed residents.' Uh, excuse the hell out of me, but it was one of YOUR own who killed that horse. So tell your own damn people to slow down. They have to obey the law too. Take responsibility for your own actions and stop throwing it onto the citizens of this great country.
