American University Yoga Club Shuts Down over ‘Cultural Appropriation’

A yoga club at American University has shut down after one student took offense and filed a complaint accusing the group of “cultural appropriation.”

All it took was one student’s complaint to dissolve the Bhakti Yoga and Vegetarian Club that had been active on American University’s (AU) campus for the last seven years.

AU student, Maya Krishnan, took offense to an event in October, in which the yoga club had invited the touring group Viva Kultura to perform on campus for its “India Day” festival.

In an op-ed, Krishnan accused the yoga club of “cultural appropriation,” due to the Viva Kultura group being “almost entirely comprised of white European dancers.”

I'm offended by all this offensiveness.

1) misleading to say she shut it down. It was the adviser who stepped to the side an no one else decided to step up

2) activities that whites see as simple "cultural phenomena" are often deeply embedded religious practices that folks from that culture find offensive when they are being portrayed by none believers or those otherwise not engrained in the culture. Hinduism is about more than simply relaxing to some stretching exercises. I do not advocate for shutting down anything, but the Hindu student is right to speak out.

Here we go again! Folks this country is being overtaken one piece at a time by minority groups. I don't mean minority races but minority groups. In this instance it only took a minority of one (1), uno, to shut down a legitimate club. So now to dance a Tango, Waltz or even to Square dance on this campus will be prohibited. Wake up and smell the coffee because it's a burnin'!!

If I see certain groups of people reading a book I will accuse them of cultural appropriation.

Does the complainer know they serve hamburgers in the cafeteria? What are her plans for that?
