People Can't Flee These US Cities Fast Enough

Why suffer when you could be happy elsewhere?

Americans have always moved to big cities to try to get ahead -- but maybe not so much anymore.

As many of the largest metro areas in the U.S. become too expensive, homeowners and potential homebuyers are ready to go elsewhere for lower taxes, good jobs and affordable homes.

Follow along as we count down the 20 metro areas that people most want to leave, according to Redfin. Residents of these places are ready to get outta town and are inclined to search for homes in other areas.

12. Salisbury, Maryland

Salisbury, on Maryland's Eastern Shore, is making a name for itself in the microbrewery scene — but the city’s already got a reputation, and not a good one.

Violent and property crime rates are twice the national average. Public schools are terrible, the real estate market is stagnant, incomes are low and good jobs are hard to find.

Although Salisbury’s unemployment and crime numbers are slowly improving, many people have apparently decided the wait just isn’t worth it.

WOW! I read the article and we are in there with some big time cities, unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. What is going to be amazing to see is that not 1 "local" news agency is going to cover this. They should be all over this and getting responses from the mayor, police chief, and council and ask them what is their plan to change this. BUT since you will only see it here, no one will talk about it, as if it never happened. Just like the crime that never gets reported. We can't attract collage kids parents money if the real crime numbers get out.

10% of the housing here is vacant, 8% in foreclosure

It's a shame because the area is between the Atlantic ocean and Baltimore and DC. The property values should be sky high. The problem is incredibly stupid leadership for close to 100 years now. Leadership with zero forward thinking skills and it's debatable whether any thinking skills. They thought for the moment and their own gain even above the future of their own children and now grandchildren. Selfish stupid people. They allowed the area to become a toxic waste dumb by encouraging and allowing factory farming. It's an area where very few people want to call home and very few business that pay well want to relocate or open up.

Joe thank you for posting the true opinions and statistics that are out there about Salisbury MD. The garbage Jake Day puts out there is a travesty

With Maryland turning into a haven for progressive liberal socialist Salisbury will only continue its downward spiral.

This is just sad. A once thriving community with great quality of life, good schools, neighborliness, and safe streets reduced to this thanks to the likes of Barrie Tilghman, Jim Ireton, and Jake Day. I doubt crime is down... probably an issue with reporting.

I've known this for 22 years, ever since my family moved to this piss-hole of a city.

But, there's the 'hugely successful' Folk Festival, Bike lanes, and I'm sure, the soon-to-be designation as a Sanctuary City.
Curious, does this apply to the thugs and gang's too?.........are they leaving The Crossroads of Delmarva?

I can't think of any positive reason to live in Salisbury. It's an ugly city, with thugs, people with nasty attitudes, poor paying jobs, high rent and zero cultural/social activities.

Sad, but at least there are 11 cities worse off. The flip side to this story was the inclusion of the 10 places were folks are flocking to...#1 being Sacramento CA. Always wondered why folks nicknamed that town "The Big Sac".

TWO DAYS UNTIL TGIF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One step Above CHICAGO.

Take this list with a grain or two of salt. Salisbury, they are right on. Sorry guys but your town SUCKS. Don't get me wrong. I came to the Shore in 2005 from eastern NC. Love opportunities to hit the outdoors across the Shore. But Salisbury is the WORST town on the Shore. Even worse than Cambridge. Run down housing, fake hood gangstas, mixed with some of the dumbest of dumb wannabe rednecks. Small town with all the problems of the big city. Unless you plan to coast through highschool and hopefully coast through life working at the gas station, LEAVE.

On the other hand, they are crazy to put DC on this list. Housing is expensive because of the massive construction boom. Those that are leaving are NOT headed to Philly. They are running to grab bigger houses outside of the city in VA and MD because they already made their money in the DC housing market. With Amazon coming, its just going up from there.

Salisbury, take note: Actually appeal to the young folks graduating from your local universities so that they actually want to put down roots as professionals in the area, attract jobs of today and the future by courting modern manufacturing and services companies, and actually develop some culture around the city that takes pride in the area without trying to trash anyone that is not from the area.

Dave T: Not surprised to see Salisbury second to none other than Detroit, as one of the worst places to live. I have spent 10 long years struggling to have a simple life in Maryland only to have learned the hard way that this liberal capital offers anything but a simplicity. I'm glad to say it's doubtful I will devote another decade to supporting a place that offers nothing but high crime, few to no decent jobs, over regulation, and a ton of what appear to be illegal immigrants. A total shame to leave after so much hard work, but I'm working very hard to find an exit once my house is sold, then this will place will become as much a part of history to me as Abraham Lincoln.

944am made a very good point that can only be repeated:

"Salisbury, take note: Actually appeal to the young folks graduating from your local universities so that they actually want to put down roots as professionals in the area, attract jobs of today and the future by courting modern manufacturing and services companies, and actually develop some culture around the city that takes pride in the area without trying to trash anyone that is not from the area."

This will take time and proper future planning.

We move to siesta key FL a year ago after living in Fruitland for 9 years. We came from across the bridge looking to get away from the city. Didn't realize crime was so high in the Salisbury area . We put a fortune in our new home. Vwe decided to move. Took over a year to sale. We got lucky I feel that the correctional facility brings crime with it. Don't need to explain. You know all about it - welfare, etc. I do think just maybe Salisbury will be a nice place to live but I don't have the time. As I write (while sitting on the beach) our PtopProp Manager sent out a text that cars were broken into in our neighborhood. Hopefully we settle on the house soon. Good luck Salisbury.

Let's not lay 100% of blame on local politicians. Ok, 99.9%. Some of the blame goes to the unions that represented workers at Crown Cork, Dresser, and the like. The unions decided to play hard ball and what happened. Those companies packed up and left town. Now of course NO ONE wants to do business here. Take a look in the "Industrial Park". Tons of empty buildings rotting away. Salisbury had the chance to get Dixon Valve here. Buildings vacant and ready to accept them. Instead they chose to build a new 100thousand square foot building in Chestertown. As one of the people on their board told me and I quote "Salisbury is a joke".

But, but, but..... but, there's no crime, or unemployment, and 90,000 people came here to see the folk festival!!

Last I checked the Eastern Shore was a bastion of conservatism so tell me again who lead Salisbury to ots current state

Folks look no further than yourselves. You dispise education, abhor anyone who doesnt look/think/act like you, and blast on and on about issues you've never taken the time to study. Who wants to start a business here in this environment with you people?

Dave T: Even though I agree with some of the commentary aforementioned, I don't blame the locals here, even though we have some real winners here. I blame the politicians because it's their distorted policies that have pushed out jobs, brought in illegal immigrants, and further burdened the hardworking people that choose to reside here. There are backward people in many rural communities, however it is political leadership that shapes how communities are run, funded and supported. Business doesn't come here because politicians have not made it beneficial to do so. It's a real disgrace as this is truly a beautiful area that should be thriving. Take note friends, this is exactly what happens when liberal control is in charge. Maryland is a liberal example of what happens when incompetence prevails over intelligence for the sake of filthy politics.

12:49pm, the Eastern Shore is red, but City of Salisbury itself has been Democratic for a long long time.

Thank a Dem Social communist AKA FAKE DAY JIM LIARTON JOHN CANNON.

I think the entire lower Eastern shore from Dorchester County south, and lower slower Delaware is crap! Nothing here but service jobs offering low wages and little opportunity for growth. It's no wonder so many, who are able have left this area.

I have got my home updated to put on the market and plan to leave here within the next five years when I retire. Plan to leave for greener pastures in North Carolina. Most of my friends have moved there. Better climate, lower taxes and less crime, and the people are a lot friendlier that the clannish shore.

This is no longer the land of pleasant living!

@12:52 you're funny!! Yea I'll continue to find it difficult to accept as normal grown men dressed as circus clown women painting GLBT decor on city streets. Most of you idiots couldn't comprehend how nice it used to be living in Salisbury. As stated it was more of the local union idiots that killed dresser Wayne, crown Cork seal, and Campbell soup. These were three major employers in the area along with PERDUE and Salisbury university. The reason people don't want to come here to start a business is plain and simple!! The "quality" and dependability of workforce doesn't exist. The area chose to spend millions on bike events, folk festivals, and feed into the drug crisis. Your city is known to all the white heroin addicts from Baltimore area to be a safer place to do their dope and milk your local/state government of all welfare programs. Then the real nail in the cities coffin is ECI and the fact that several Baltimore gangs have made Salisbury home after released from the Somerset county institution. So it has nothing to do with people's dislike for all the liberal socialist free government entitlement and our dislike for people to just use and have some damn common sense.

Could not agree more. The monkeys are running the asylum. Very immature, inexperienced, arrogant leadership- all the way around.

I said "F" it. I walked away from my beautiful home, relocated in a non recourse southern state and brought a second home within a 45 day calendar cycle. I found a new job in law enforcement that do not pay no where as near what I use to get paid. My beautiful home did go into foreclosure which affected my credit just a little because my second home and paying current expenses keeps the rating above 580. I'm not a shame of my decision. I was desperate to leave city of Salisbury, Md. I'm so happy with my life, now. Take a chance and just leave. I lived in Salisbury for 25 years and I just hated the town. So I just walked away from everything. Finally, living my dream.

You sound like one of the hard core Dresser employees who had been working there since age 18 . You expected the union and dresser to take care of you for life. You got a rude awakening.

We keep improving every time one of these low life's move out!!!! Salisbury gate way of the Eastern Shore!!!

Haha. I love your mixed metaphor!

So we are driving down Route 13 north last Saturday and a police car is chasing a car with tinted windows . Next thing we see are two dudes jumping out of the car and taking off on foot near the laundromat across from the old ES Adkins building. Three police cruisers surround the car with guns in hand and the dudes are off and running. This just makes me want to move out of this town sooner than later! But oh yes...I forgot Fake Day keeps saying Salisbury is the land of pleasant living and stay turned for the next National Folk Festival that will bring record numbers. I just don't feel safe anymore in this city and hoping in the next year to be able to get out of dodge!

All this misery because you didn't elect JOE ALBERO as mayor years ago. Who's ELECTION was it to LOSE again?

Anonymous said...

Salisbury is simply a microcosm of liberal philosophy and ideas that have manifested themselves in true reality resulting from the existence of the liberal leadership that is in place. It will continue to be.a reflection of that culture as long as the voters continue to vote for the existing members and similar ones in the future. In other words, what you see is what you are getting and will continue to get as long as voters continue to do the same.

Thanks for posting this. Absolutely humiliating

1:58 you're an idiot. Wages are based on the marketable value of the skill. You're one of those that thinks fast food workers should make $20 an hour.

I think he meant to say it's the land of peasant living.

11:55,been looking there too but properties are in a bubble there now.

Anonymous said...

No good jobs coming to Salisbury for 3 reasons, too costly to build in the city because good ole boys own all the properties and to costly to build outside because of environmental regs,to many regs on businesses can simply move to pro business Delaware.

Some of us would like to flee but can't.

I'm SOOOO grateful that I can come and go from the cesspool Salisbury has become. I stay close enough to the area to ensure my elderly parents safety. Once their gone I'll burn the old home place to the ground if I have to and donate the property to HALO or some other Non Profit
