ID cards to help undocumented immigrants in Baltimore

The Archdiocese of Baltimore hopes the cards will help people without government ID cards feel safe asking police for help.

Baltimore police have agreed to recognize identification cards that the city’s Catholic churches issue to undocumented immigrants and other vulnerable residents.

Baltimore’s mayor Catherine Pugh said the Parish ID program is meant to help Baltimore residents who don’t have government-issued identification feel comfortable calling the police if they become victims of a crime.

“This effort will help us strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and some of our most vulnerable populations,” Pugh said during a press conference on the steps of Baltimore’s Sacred Heart of Jesus church Wednesday. “No one should become a victim and be afraid to call the police.”

The Parish ID program is the result of efforts from community activists and Catholic charity organizations. The initiative has the “full weight” of the Archdiocese of Baltimore behind it, Archbishop William E. Lori said at the press conference.

“This ID provides one avenue to freedom from fear,” Lori said.

How about instead they hand out citizenship applications!! I am so tired of hearing stories about how liberal places bend over for these criminals. If you are undocumented then you should be arrested and shipped out.

Baltimore is falling further into chaos. A once vibrant city is now riddled with violence, drugs, murder and illegals. Can we give Baltimore to another state? Just give it away?

I still say give them all 3 months to register and require a $5,000 fee to be paid within 1 years of registration. Then use the money to pay for the wall, anybody caught without proper registration after 3 months will be automatically deported. Anyone not paying the fee within the time frame will be automatically deported.

I am sure the church was built by immigrants and the majority of it's fellowship was/is immigrant but those who built it, the majority, did not sneak across the border in order to do so

what a load! ID to make them feel "safe" - but no ID necessary to vote!

Dave T: I am a Roman Catholic, but I want to know, since when is it the Catholic church's role to advocate for illegal immigration? I have a real problem with this. Must say, doesn't the Catholic church have enough unresolved problems already? Or, are they just trying to lend further support to the Sanctuary City concept? I'm sure Mollie Tibbets and Kate Steinle would have a different opinion on this if they were still alive to voice their opinion.

The Bishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore and the Priests need to be locked up for participating in these Federal crimes.

I'm Roman Catholic as well and I am getting sick and tired of the Liberal Pope, Cardinals, Bishops and Priests.

Why does the catholic church get away with helping people that commit crimes?
