Teacher fired for refusing to give students credit for homework not turned in

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WCMH) -- Should students get credit for work not handed in?

One Florida teacher said no, took a stand, and now she's been fired for that move.

Motivation, inspiration-- that's what Diana Tirado strives to provide her students as a longtime teacher.

"Teaching is a calling for me," Tirado told NBC affiliate WPTV.

So she thought the same when she started teaching 8th grade history at West Gate in Port Saint Lucie last month.

But then she assigned an explorer notebook project that many students didn’t turn in.

It was at this point Tirado found out about what she says is the school's no zero policy reflected here in the student and parent handbook.

"But what if they don't turn it in, and they say we'll give them a 50. Oh no we don't," said Tirado.

Tirado was terminated on September 14 but there's no clause mentioned in the letter from the principal since she was still in her probationary period.

Those kids will expect to be paid for days they don't show up for work, or pizzas they don't deliver.

That is just plain sad,we I went to school and you didn't turn it you DID NOT great credit for it and so it still should be that way,it gonna be sad to see this next generation. I think that principal should lose his or her job.

How do the kids prove the homework was done unless they turn it in?

Unfortunately, this is why good teachers quit and go to private school. It's not the money, obviously. It's the backing of the principal for common sense rules that apply to ALL. Experienced and dedicated teachers will accommodate and differentiate for all students when needed. The right to get credit when there is no work completed is not one of those accommodations that benefits the student in real life! That's what teaching is supposed be about.....preparing and encouraging success after the school years are over.

Just a little peek at our future. I hope we can still produce enough to attend the military academies in the future .

This generation is being taught that holding out your hand and demanding things will get you what you want. Grades...free food...it's exactly the same. Until our country is willing to get real with this lazy entitled problem, things like this will happen more and more.

Sad. Good for her! A school with some integrity should scoop her up.

Policies that prohibit grades below 50% are just so they can pass no-effort students who eventually can fog a mirror. Genuine disservice to the kid and our society.

The Barney NOW generation was bad enough but now with phones and social Media these kids all think they are smarter than their teachers and connected like Kardashians and Honey BooBoo

They do this many places, including here on the shore. One place is Somerset county. It's called sub-par education. Which is why I didn't send my kids there.

I think this teacher is a hero!
Hope she stays a teacher and finds new employment soon.
Government run public schools need to be abolished. We need to get the unions and government out of the public schools and hold educators, parents, and children accountable for a change.
