A Viewer Writes: Ocean City

Unfortunate accident in Ocean City. A beach goer was impaled by a beach umbrella today on 54th street. From what I heard the umbrella was embedded in the upper chest area. Paramedics could not remove the umbrella but had to cut the umbrella off so that the patient could be loaded onto the State Trooper Helicopter and transported to the hospital.

Paramedics wouldn't want to remove the umbrella, because it's plugging the hole. You want to remove it in a controlled location, like a hospital. Same line of thinking goes with other kinds of wounds.

Instead of policing beer and cigarettes, maybe they should go around checking improperly anchored umbrellas on windy days.

IMO that should not be a policeman's job. Freak accident not a criminal occurrence. My thoughts and prays for the lady.

Rickie - that median wall sure did its job!!!!

Bricky- what does the median fence have to do with a rogue umbrella? You have an issue.

Why is there no regulation on umbrellas and installation / safety procedures. OC has regulations on everything else. Wonder if lawsuit will be filed and if OC will be liable since they are allowing installation on City property without Safety regulations.

You never pull anything out of the chest or abdominal cavity. Steve Irwin you remember was pierced in the chest by a sting ray and he made the fatal mistake of pulling it out. Best to cut it off like they did and leave to a surgical team in surgery.

What was Vlad doing in Ocean City?

I worked beach stands as a kid. You can set the umbrella properly, it’s not complicated. The problems arise when the customer moves or repositions the umbrella.

no the problem is the tourist that buys the 4.99 brella at sunsations and does not know how to stick it in sand and also leaves for half the day while it still is up
