How Municipalities Are Destroying Local Businesses

Do you remember back in the day when locals used to come together for their local communities like "Save Seven For September"? Many of you won't recall that name but it ultimately became Sunfest, taken over by Ocean City.

Back in the day events like Save Seven For September was all about local volunteers representing a multitude of non profits like Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and numerous Volunteer Fire Departments and Ladies Auxiliaries. Oyster Fritters were battered by hand and were by far the most delicious. Women would do a tremendous amount of cooking and baking at home and bring their good out for sale to donate their revenue to all these organizations.

Everyone came together to support other local businesses and local businesses did everything they could to support this event.

When the event started growing and the word started spreading about how great the food was and how well attended it became, then came all the regulations and ultimately Ocean City started "sanctioning" this event, which ultimately became Sunfest.

"Bike Week" was yet another event that started out as an incredible success until Ocean City decided they had to have their hands in the event but we can't ignore the Classic Car events and even the H20 event. The problem with ALL of these events Ocean City now has their hands in is the fact that the municipality has far more money to bring in national acts that compete with the likes of Seacrets and so many other local venues.

Oh, it may sound like I'm complaining but I'm really not. I'm simply trying to educate everyone on what the future holds. You see, Bike Week, (more than likely) will end, (especially Spring Bike Week) because Ocean City and the people who head up this event refuse to properly organize the event and it has basically petered out. They have also raised their prices to vendors so high that it has driven vendors and customers away. It would be one thing if they had a ton of organized activities like bike rallies and so forth but that isn't in their interest at all. They have milked every single penny they could out of these events to a point attendance continues to drop and could disappear forever.

It's a shame municipalities can't retain quality professionals to organize and manage these events properly. It reminds me a LOT about Jake Day's Folk Festival. You bring in a bunch of kids with absolutely no experience and the event will be very short lived. All one has to do is look at what Ocean City has done to destroy well intended events by "PAYING IT FORWARD" back to our very own local economy.

The Jake Day's and Rick Mehan's of the Shore would rather watch such events disappear and or run at the cost of us local taxpayers while destroying Local Businesses who pay a tremendous amount of taxes just to stay alive.

I actually watched some local West Ocean City businesses close their doors by 11 PM this past Friday and Saturday night. We were fortunate enough to enjoy a great weekend but we cannot ignore what Ocean City is doing to hurt these businesses. To watch the Town of Ocean City rake in such profits at the expense of VOLUNTEERS and watch the scraps leave our communities only to head back to other states, (vendors) is just shameful.

I'll ask, when is the last time you heard funds, (profits) going to Little League, Volunteer Fire Departments on the Shore and so many other non profits from the multitude of events originally created by local businesses or organizations? Nope, the profits go right into the general fund of these municipalities so they can bring in even larger entertainers next year. In the mean time us small businesses will continue to try to stay alive and pay these taxes to keep these amateurs off our backs.

Maybe the business owners and volunteers need to come together and exclude municipalities from competing with us with taxpayer money.

Well, OC did the right thing by getting rid of the H2O hooligans, but the lowered speed limits to intimidate and soak the cruisers is going to backfire. Registrations are down this year and I'd bet they will be so annoyed that they move both the spring and fall events to other locations by next year.

Sad to say but Salisbury's demise is upon you now. Once Jake day continues to run the city in the ground and the ridiculous festival garbage pans out you will be left with nothing and no one of any quality that will want to run your city. You will be a mirror of Baltimore in a decade or less

Your not saying anything new JOE!!!! I heard the mayor of OC on a radio talk show, and he said he was glad that this certain event (I forgot which one, maybe H20) was being held outside of ocean city, because they look at it like it is a head ache to them... He said he preys and hopes they don't even end up or show up in OC altogether!!!!!

My guess is, they want these events to stop and end altogether, so they can claim they need to raise taxes on the residents of OC, you know for the kids sake!!!! Everything is for the kids right?????

Why else would you complain about making money for your city???? and wished it would go away???

I keep telling you fools, cops and politicians and the like don't give two shits about you, your life or anyone else but their own... and until it affects their own life they don't give a damn... Same thing with most of your viewers, who refuse to take action but complain about the things they have the power to fix... You can recall these politician who refuse to follow your will, and what they promise you to get your vote... You just have to take action and stand together...

We have pretty much stopped going to OC for a few years now, except for the occasional trip so the wife can get some fries, which I don't care for all that much. It certainly has not been a family friendly town for quite some time. It's for the young people who want to party, fight, try to pick up other members for sex and the criminal behavior. (Which a cop told me was mostly caused by people from Salisbury lol) As if everyone in OC were angels.

As far as taxes go, they have a lot of high priced employees there and pensions to fund. Not to mention feed for their horses so they can poop on the beach, boardwalk and anywhere they want basically.

And good ole bike week. A lot of people around here don't like bikes or bikers for whatever reasons. Fear, jealousy, ignorant of what they are about, who knows. And yes, there are those "bikers" that do not help matters, but then those are really not bikers. Wannabe's at best. Just having enough money to buy a bike does not make anyone a "biker". Just another poser pretending he is somebody and leaving a black mark against the rest of us.

The good people who go there for a good time, or anywhere for that matter, are being pushed out by the rowdies, druggies, criminals, and all the other rude undesirables that behave like they had no upbringing.

I hope for everyone's sake they have officers in a unit that are trained in terrorism. These days you never know when or where they will strike, or if some lonely kid in a basement somewhere gets brainwashed into doing something bad for allah. There are a lot of people that visit on summer weekends. Population goes from about 8k to over 300k.

A terrible shame that they take away from local organizations just to line their own pockets. I remember many events being fun but now it's about the almighty dollar and what fees they can impose on people to participate. All of this will be by the wayside just like County Fairs did.

I did not read about the outsiders that moved to OC helped in this change because they don't like the pumper to pumper traffic, load noises, squealing / smoking tires / burning rubber of tires etc. They want piece and quit unless it is something they like. That is what is wrong with not only the Eastern Shore culture but the US culture, everybody wants to come here because of the culture and outdoor living. Then when they get here they want to change everything to the way it is where they came from. All I can say is leave and go back to where you came from. We on the Shore had a better quality of life, lived successfully and prosperous without all their BS. Just another bunch of liberals that wants to be another Putin, Hitler, Castro to name a few.

Let OC sink and become the Haunted Island of Horrors. Then lets see what the complainers will do. No maintenance, No businesses, Poor sanitation conditions, turn into the Vacation ghetto.

There is noise about increasing metered parking for increased revenue. It's not the meter fee that will get you, it will bee the $450 towing fee to get you car out of impoundment.

I find it interesting that the Town eliminated the ability for Bus Drivers to accept tips (10 years ago while allowing bathroom cleaners that privilege. More than likely, if tips to Councilmen were permitted, there would be no complaints.

If Bus Drivers do not provide you more service than you expected, don't blame them.

Remember the Democratic Clubs? They were where politicians attempted to connect to voters with a free drink.

Democrats still want the vote but you have to pay for your own beer.

I agree with this article, but, don't leave Culver out of it. The County controls two large areas, Winterplace and Parker Athletic Complex and property around Perdue Stadium! Myrtle Beach did the same with their Bike Week events, they simply moved a little south to Surfside Beach and Murrell's Inlet and the event is larger than ever! So it can be moved....screw Ocean City! I tell you Oasis was packed 3 days in a row.....the killer is off site parking. Let the Baltimorons and Washingtonfaries have Ocean City see if they can sustain it year round, new blood needed in political arena of O.C.!

It was called Save Six For September.

The "leaders" in OC are in office for one reason, THEMSELVES! They take care of thier own, in return they get paid, albiet by means hard to track, like real estate commissions and referrals, or sweet inside deals. Tricky Ricky is the greatest example by far.

Joe, time to start OCNEWS.blogspot ! The corruption with the Mare and Silly Council dar exceeds Salisbury. It makes me sick to my stomach what I've seen this town turn into. The politics are dirty, selfish, and borderline criminal.

Anonymous said...

Problem is the Town can pay whatever they want, for services, entertainment, and "Fellow" employees, because they don't have to worry about a loss. Simple example, third year in a row, the Council has voted to rake the emergency reserve to balance the budget, while refusing to address a declining assessment. Accounting 101, true idiots that will continue to drive the resort into the ground.

Anonymous said...

Welcome to Ocean City Joe! You think it's rough in West Ocean City, try paying taxes in town and make an honest living. I left for Delaware, and will never look back.

The Council is back on parking meters after the public and business people said No!a few years ago. But bet your ass, the goig ole bots businesses will be exempt (49th street excuded for one) and get this, the new tag reader system, where guess who, the Mayor can have entered all his buddies into tge system, and park ANYWHERE. The more layers you peel, the worse it smells

Ocean city is right back to their old ways, tax it, charge it, screw it, there's more where that came from. Most every "local" moved to WOC or left all together, the remaining residents can't afford to leave with the market crash. Don't worry, if you must leave because of the mayor's failed initiatives, he'll list your house, and kiss you one last time.

You have been very quiet for almost a year, got involved with local business, so now truly and FINALLY welcome to the fun we call Ocean City - Joe.

We are sorry for has happened to Salisbury, but coming 25 minutes further east - well, larger funding problems reside here too. Sad really, since many who have come/gone in recent years where not as young/lacking seasoning like the Mayor of Salisbury. Quite the opposite in fact. Many years of experience but all with the same instinct with regards to one simple thing - money! OC is now over built, empty condo's abound, taxes upon taxes and now simple revenue generators (off season weekend fun like cars/bikes/etc) about being shuttered away. I'm sure you can tell the recent explosion of business in West OC. That's because City Hall cannot touch them.

So sad it hurts typing such truths...how vacationers don't want to be bothered with high prices/traffic and future street WALLS that they are now vacationing north and south. Used to be fun 4th of July weeks until parking meters became important or old bridges break that paralyzes the entire coastal highway or last spring's blackout for 5 hours downtown during car show Saturday.

Yes this is nothing new, but glad you've finally addressed this as a local businessman.

4:45 PM really , shut up. you and your worn out whining about outsiders coming here and teaching you something new. open your eyes. learn something. there is a big ole world out there that thinks you are an uneducated idiot. and they are correct.

Oh my Lord. Our saviors. You guys taught us something alright but it isn't new nor is it good. If it was so great why did you leave it? 445 was spot on.

There's only so much golden goose. Given social media, a bad reception by a town will look like a reverse run on the bank when the money spenders abandon it. OC has high fixed costs for its infrastructure and employees, especially in summer. OC businesses have the same without the pension and benefit overhead.

The money spenders don't come to OC to sit in an expensive room and watch WBOC; they want to be out and about, which causes congestion and a certain amount of noise as they spend.

Joe I haven't been to concert at Springfest or Sunfest quite a few years and I thought I would get tickets to go see Trace Adkins again. Seen him in OC and Salisbury maybe 5 times. He used to come every year.

Then I got online for Trace Adkins tickets for last weekend and they wanted $250 dollars a ticket for Trace Adkins who hasn't had a hit on the charts in many years. $250 dollars for nosebleed seats. WTH is going on in Ocean City. I will never attend another event at Springfest or Sunfest again. I checked other concerts at Springfest and they were just as high. You people paying that much for those concert tickets in Ocean City are friggin IDIOTS.

The council is made up of big spenders of others money, the Lord himself, past City Manager Dennis Dare. How many times did he give himself and his buddies a raise? Tricky Ricky voted for every one. Everyone there voted for a new 27 million dollar trash complex, seriously, and another convetion center expansion, when they have to take from the reserves to meet the current budget.

2:40- the one's doing the complaining is mostly you. You're here everyday, stating how enlightened you are and how stupid the rest of us are. I know who you are by your extra frivilous use of question marks. We don't need you to restate what Joe just posted! Especially when you're a real ASS about it! Take a hike, Bozo!

You are a lonely pathetic little man-child with no self awareness. We don't need to hear and definately won't follow your tired nonsense. It's just sad, loser.

SALISBURY sucks because you ALL can't SHUT UP. ALWAYS have to degrade a person for whatever reason. Then they leave and go elsewhere to do a great job, pay taxes. Yet you ALL wonder why SALISBURY can't grow NOTHING but the government assistance roles. BRILLIANT.

Bike Week Started in the Fall at Fort Whaley! I have been attending ever since. It outgrew Fort Whaley, went to the Race Track for a short time, and then was Spread out between Salisbury, Seaford, and Berlin Area. Now Ocean City Tries to claim it as does Seacrets! Used to be called Delmarva Bike Week, as it should be called. I refuse to buy anything labeled Ocean City Bike week. Also refuse to attend a Bike Week in the Spring. I will continue to wait until the original in the Fall, and visit all the Delmarva sites that participate. I hope Winterplace park can participate again, nothing against Shorebirds just that Blacktop can put off some heat after some time.

10:45- Salisbury sucks because of the comments posted on a internet blog? Man, are you serious? I hope not! So each murder in Salisbury is likely the result of a previous comment I left here? Am I causing a rape or murder by typing this very comment? Are you really that stupid? I thought I've read some pretty silly comments in the past that were way out in left field, but yours! Wow! That is just an awful failure at trolling. I mean really, really bad. You should ease up on the CAPS, and maybe go back to school. Get that G.E.D..

445 is a moron as are most of these people posting to this. You born here’s a clueless lot...being taken advantage of by your own old boys club.....the folks like myself who came here loved the area and moved here. After years of seeing the ignorance and lack of any progress I knew it was time to leave. Keep the faith you born here’s....as it goes now within a few years you will all be left with nothing...no jobs, no money.....and then you can point fingers at each other...the true problem...

Ocean City is one bad season from financial disaster. Serious crime up,prices up, and a Mare and minions that care more about BS than the big pictures. Very poor outlook.

thank you for leaving. we have survived just fine without your type and will continue to do so. Since you are the one moving from one area to another maybe you are your own problem. You and your ilk move here because you like the area but then leave after a while. Seems to me that is your problem, not ours. You can keep changing locations but you cannot run from who you are. Bye-bye.

May 8, 2018 at 12:07 PM- That's a mighty bold assumption. I've been here 42 years. I have everything I could ask for. I make a lot more than the average family income, and I work for myself. I am not commenter 4:45, but I take offense to your inclusion of people like me in your statement. Frankly, I think we are all happier you left.

HAHAHA. You just made his point by missing it!! Your more concerned about his writing than what was said. He said people in Salisbury degrad others. Just as you did. GED?? What are you a proud 10 YEAR worwic college grad??

Anonymous said...

I’m happier I left to...the negativity against people who come here is ridiculous and ignorant. There is nothing for a young person to do for a career...no real jobs of any Kind. Leaving the shore has been a blessing to both myself and my family......it’s amazing how toxic the shore is once you leave it for a while. As I said in a previous comment you born here’s will simply have yourselves to blame as what little business that is left on the shore leaves.....just Remember every time someone leaves the shore they take their paid taxes...money they would spend just living day to day and poof it’s gone...as another business closes its doors...less progress daily...saw a lot of MD license plates in our area this past winter....wonder why....

Absolutely right 6:00. They ALL Chase good professionals with bullying. They harass and ridicule a PW DIRECTOR who fixed and recouped millions for Salisbury and they ridicule her. Yet the one PW DIRECTOR who spent millions on a non functioning WWTP. FINED ten's of thousands of dollars by MDE walk away without a word. WHY??

JOHN JACOBS is the screw up.

TERESA GARDNER fixed it.

Yet Jacobs keeps coming back to Salisbury. Seen him at the zoo several times. Last time I did told him to GTFOH. Hes such a DUFUSS.
