Sheriff: Assailant In Maryland School Shooting Died From Self-Inflicted Wound

Authorities now say that a student in Maryland who fatally shot a fellow classmate and seriously hurt another died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a confrontation with a school resource officer.

Initial reports suggested that Deputy First Class Blaine Gaskill, the resource officer at Great Mills High School, in Great Mills, Md., might have killed the shooter, 17-year-old Austin Rollins.

In a statement issued by the St. Mary's County sheriff's office said evidence indicates that last Tuesday, after Rollins fired a single shot that hit one student in the head and another in the leg, he was confronted in a hallway by Gaskill.

Rollins, however, then "fired one fatal shot to his head; simultaneously DFC Gaskill also fired one non-fatal shot, which struck the weapon in Rollins' hand," it said.

This is a non issue and you know the left is going to make it one. If the officer did not confront it would have clearly been worse.

Typical. All these “know it alls” rushed to praise the sheriffs deputy for neutralizing the threat. He didn’t do anything. The guy killed himself.

9:11 AM: Regardless, you would have pissed in your pants while running the other way.

9:11 you are a mouth breathing tard. He was about be overtaken by a superior gun fighter. He chose to do the right thing. Go back to your mother's couch and take another bong hit loser

Doesn't negate the fact that the cop ran toward the gun fire and engaged the shooter.

The sheriff's deputy surely prevented more people from being shot.

@9:11
Here we go. Typical liberal logic. How do you know that by the officer firing and hitting the weapon that the gun didn't go off? How do you that simply by the Officer confronting the shooter he didn't decide to take his own life? How do you know that if the Officer was not there to confront the shooter that the rampage may have continued. Open your mind and give credit where credit is due. Bottom line is it didn't escalate into a full scale disaster, AND a person WITH A GUN was there to stop it had he not decided to end his own life.

The shooter was not there for a mass casualty event. He had a target, shot her then killed himself. That was his plan. The deputy did the right thing but you can't really say he stopped a school shooting. BTW, I am all for LEO in schools rather than armed teachers.

The officer took action and shot at the shooter, but the coward shot himself. So yes the officer did neutralize the threat

You don't know whether he would have shot others or not. He was confronted by the officer before he had the chance to shoot others. He shot himself because he was confronted and was being shot at himself

9:11 claims in typical liberal logic that the officer "didn't do anything"? Really? FYI this Officer Stopped the Active Shooter from shooting more young students. This officer is rightfully considered a hero for running into the gunfire without hesitation. This action takes a lot of guts, not like the liberal ideas of "oh, lets take a cover and wait while the punk is shooting up the inside of the school". Ask yourselves, Why do these mentally challenged punks go to these Gun Free Zones and shoot people? Because they know nobody there will be shooting back! Ever heard of someone try to start shooting at NRA event? Gee, I wonder why. Liberals want you to believe that criminals obbey the laws and Gun Free Zone Signs stop any shooters. Wake Up Sheeple!

Hardly. I’ve been shot at on multiple occasions and, not once, did I piss my pants.

Exactly. I am retired LEO. The kid wasn’t intent on killing anyone other than the girl and himself.

1250 having the gun is establishing "intent" and ability to kill! You have no idea of anything else without seeing the investigation! Stop pretending to be part of the thin blue line.

12:50 Really? If the kid/punk wanted to just shoot the girl and himself why was he doing it inside the school? He could waited for her outside of school or other place, but he didn't. So naybe no need to play fake LEO and take your meds.

12:48 Medal Valor or Grand theft Auto do not count. If you were shot at and your butt did not pucker during or after you are an anomaly. One of those video tough guys. I can assure you it has a certain toll on your psyche. So tell that to the kids. You are no gun fighter.

Based on reading the attached article, the killer planned to shoot his former girlfriend, and did so. Article contends that bullet kept traveling and wounded the student who survived; apparently not an intended target.

Shortly afterward in a different hallway killer was confronted by the deputy. Didn't say how close they were to each other. Deputy shot at him at same time he was fatally shooting himself.

No discussion as to remaining bullets in killer's gun, or extra ammo. He did shoot himself but not at location where he shot the girl. Was killing himself or others his intent or snap decision once he met resistance? Might never know.

Deputy did the right thing; good he was there. Lost lives were needless tragedy.

You show just how stupid you are. It happened so quickly, each time, that you don’t have time to “pucker”. You immediately revert to your training and seek cover while focusing on the shooter. AFTER the incident you reflect back and take inventory of your faculties. But, you wouldn’t know. You’ve never had it happen to you. I have.
