Trump administration proposes sending food directly to low-income families

The Trump administration proposed Monday to have the Department of Agriculture prepare and send packages of food directly to low-income families, replacing a portion of their food stamp benefits.

The proposal, new in the White House fiscal 2019 budget, is for families to receive some of their benefits “in the form of a USDA Foods package, which would include items such as shelf-stable milk, ready-to-eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit, vegetables, and meat, poultry or fish.”

Office of Management and Budget director Mick Mulvaney called it a "Blue Apron-type program" Monday afternoon, comparing it to the meal kit service. The government would save money on the box, he said, because it could buy the food items wholesale, whereas typically food stamp recipients have to buy food at retail prices.

The package would replace a portion of traditional Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for families receiving more than $90 in benefits a month as a way of saving money, increasing the nutritional value of benefits, and cracking down on fraud.

The broader budget document, which is a proposal from the White House to Congress, calls for reducing SNAP or food stamp spending by more than $200 billion over the next 10 years. The government spent $64 billion on SNAP benefits in 2017.

Saves money by getting food directly to the needy at wholesale prices, helps the economy by creating jobs for those that package the foodstuffs, and creates a steady stream for a number of food items that will be bought by the government for the needy on a regular basis. All the while, reducing the fraud potential of food stamp conversion diverting needed resources to ciggies, booze, and tv's/22"bling-rims! You'll see the number of real users decline as they determine they can't convert it to cash any more!

Great idea!

I don't give the guy on the street money - but I'll hand him/her a banana!

Walk into any office that accepts applications for welfare or it's associated benefits. Get back to us on the people of color/white employee ratio. Who do you think gets the easier road to benefits?

When my white brother lost his job after he had a stroke, food stamps was the one thing social services didn't hesitate to give him. Everything else he got he had to fight for. And FYI he has NO assets.

I love this Trump Administration idea. It will save tons of money while guarantee nourishing meals in turn making the recipients healthier too!!!

How will the food stamp recipients buy there liquor and dope if they have no food stamps to sell? I can see it now, BLM will be protesting that we are being racist because we are taking away their right to free enterprise. I am offended!!!!

Receipients don't want to be healthier 7:49 AM, they want to go where they know they can get money for the food stamps then buy what they want. That's why they are so against the President's idea.

As I was driving past section 8 housing I noticed new SUVs. One guy was pulling onto the road driving a new decked out Escalade. Enough is enough. I say add 10,000 agents to investigate the fraud. It would fund itself in six months. It is odd that the Department Of Agriculture controls the food stamp budget ??? It is sad children born into these households are doomed at birth. Who teaches them a work ethic when third generation welfare is what they see as an example. I blame the Democrats they created this monster. I just feel for the children they do not have a chance.

BAM!!!!

I LOVE Trump! Kick their low-life generational welfare aces to the curb and run over them with a bread truck.
people that work for a living have a hard enough time taking care of their families.
They don't need to be taking care of 3 or 4 OTHER families.

The lady above has TWO jobs, but these losers haven't found a job in FORTY YEARS????
