A Viewer Writes: Speed Cameras US vs UK

I have noticed that the speed and red light cameras in the United Kingdom are painted bright yellow to deter drivers from speeding and running red lights. Drivers see these and instantly slow down and follow the rules of the road. They are there to remind drivers of the laws and not to primarily make money for the government.

When I go thru town and look see the speed cameras in Salisbury, the red light cameras in Seaford and the assortment mounted up street polls in DC. I notice that the city/county/state go out of their way to make them as inconspicuous as possible... going as far as to camouflage them as electrical boxes or telephone pedestals. Drab colors that blend in to the surroundings so that new drivers to the area will not pick up on their location.

I agree, speeding and running red lights is bad and those who do it should be penalized. But in the case of a school zone where the lives of children are at risk... i would rather the driver notice the camera and slow down versus collecting money. Is the value of a ticket greater than the value of a pedestrians life?

I hate those street polls in DC. They always ask too many questions.

It depends on the pedestrian....

Speed cameras make very little money for the government. They make it for the vendors who lobby extensively for them. The government bureaucracy that "oversees" these cameras absorbs the money made from them. Then they rob Peter to pay Paul when they hand over money to the municipalities. It's all a big scam.

Why is the speed camera still up on Rt 50 by Wi Middle? We were told the cameras were originally put up to slow down traffic in that area with the kids crossing rt 50, with the fence installed isn't the speed cameras now obsolete?

Our American cameras are the American way.

I just got a ticket for driving on Rt. 50 near Annapolis just before Christmas. It was a "Safe Zone" ticket. I've never heard of cameras in the so called safe zones. I only knew about them in the school zones.

What bothers me is it said I was driving 67 in a 55 and I know better than driving fast in a work zone. Who would drive fast in a work zone when there is always a state trooper there anyway. I looked at the picture and it was my vehicle, but I saw another vehicle just in front of me and no construction vehicles or cones. Also, if I wanted to contest it I had to do it 20 days before the Feb. 2 deadline. I just got it in the male about a week ago. This is a speed trap and it should be against the law.

of course our speed camera's blend in. The speed cops want to CATCH you not warn you. Why do you think they hide behind bushes and trees? They want your money not slow u down.
