Eleven die in Delaware from likely overdoses over holiday weekend

DOVER — Eleven people died in Delaware of suspected drug overdoses between Wednesday and Monday. The Department of Health and Social Services announced Monday 11 people, ranging from ages 23 to 62, died from overdoses over the Thanksgiving holiday.

“We know that people who are suffering from addiction are vulnerable, and those vulnerabilities often become heightened during the holidays,” DHSS Secretary Kara Odom Walker said in a statement.

“The holidays can be stressful and may be a trigger point for people struggling with substance use disorder. The most important thing that families can do is to help their loved ones find a connection to treatment and to get them to that initial intake.”

A total of 215 people have died from suspected overdoses in Delaware this year. Three hundred eight died in 2016.

Hmmmmmm Don't take drugs. Just say no. I feel bad for their families. A little self control could have saved these people.

1:24 You can tell you have no idea what you are talking about. Sure the first time they ever did it was their choice, but after that they had created a chemical imbalance in their brain. They need help to get away from it they do need to be the one that wants the help you can't force them. Self control would be nice there wouldn't be so many on drugs if they just needed self control. I have never been on drugs, but I learned a lot when a family member was on them. We just stayed by their side and let them take care of their own problem. Now they are doing awesome because they asked for help!

This is "Natural Selection", or "Thinning the Herd", only the weak minded do drugs, so no great loss.

2:47 you can't tell people they don't know what they're talking about when you said yourself it was their decision to take that first hit. Can't say they didn't know what was going to happen can't become a lying, stealing addict by your own doing then blame everyone else all the while becoming a drain on society.

It seems like you hear about lots of relapses even if they have been to a rehab treatment facility.

Dumb and dumber....is all I can say. I have 4th stage cancer and require the drugs for pain so I can wrap the childrens Christmas presents. When you speak in broad based statement you appear just to have a one track idiot mind.

@3:54 I agree!! I say designate am area supply them with necessary paraphernalia and product and let them go. The weakest will kill themselves off and the remainder will realize people are sick of their excuses and either grow up or die

Sorry to say some addicts are better off dead..they ruined their lives so terribly. Everyone of these people make choices everyday. They make the choice to live the way they live, and hurt themselves and others. All hard drugs lead to death, either quick or horrible and slow.

Wow you are so judgemental. That's what wrong with this country. I know some one who was addicted, but it was their choice the first time I guess if they knew any better when the Dr. prescribed it to them after a procedure and they were only 17 they could have just said no or their parents if they knew anything about them 10 yrs ago. I just hope none of you have anyone close to you going through it. But the way you talk you are all Perfect!!

I've tried a couple of times to help people out struggling with addiction and I learned the majority truly don't want to get better. They say they do because their probably in some sort of legal trouble and can'/don't want to be incarcerated. A big number of addicts have some dort of mental illness and rather than seeking proper help tgeyvCHOOSE to self medicate. I have no sympathy for addicts, WHY? because I am one and I chose to live a better life and fight the fight to stay clean. Its all in a persons heart and soul, renew your spirit and mind and disassociate yourselves from the game. It is possible, god bless

It has been and it doesn't change my mind.

I find it really difficult to see these people as victims, or sick people. They CHOOSE to abuse drugs. It's what they call a good time. Let them be.
