On December 6, 2017, a Wicomico County jury found Byron Maurice Simpson, 34, guilty of Sex Abuse of a Minor, Second Degree Rape and Second Degree Assault. Simpson raped a 13-year old girl in a car at an address in Fruitland in the early morning hours of May 13, 2017. Sentencing was deferred pending a pre-sentence investigation and mental health assessment. The State expects sentencing will occur in approximately sixty (60) days. Simpson is being held without bond while awaiting sentencing.
Simpson faces up to fifty-five (55) years in prison. Simpson will also be subject to lifetime registration and lifetime supervision as a sexual offender. Simpson has prior convictions for Fourth Degree Sex Offense and Failing to Register as a sexual offender.
The case was investigated by Detective Rockwell of the Salisbury Police Department and members of the Department of Social Services - Child Protective Services, assigned to the Wicomico Child Advocacy Center, and Detective Beaver of the Fruitland Police Department. Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Karen M. Dean prosecuted the case. Ad Interim State’s Attorney Jamie L. Dykes said, “Another successful, joint effort to hold a child sexual offender accountable. I commend the hard work of the Fruitland Police Department and the members of the Wicomico Child Advocacy Center, including Salisbury Police Department and the Department of Social Services, to make this County a safer place for our children.”
