MDOT SHA CLOSES EASTBOUND US 50 SALISBURY BYPASS FOR PAVEMENT DAMAGE AND EROSION

Motorists to be Detoured to US 50 Business through Downtown Salisbury

(August 15, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration today (MDOT SHA) closed the eastbound US 50/US 13 Salisbury Bypass at the US 50 Business (Salisbury Boulevard) split due to pavement damage and drainage erosion just prior to US 13 Business. The right lane was already closed at the same location for a pipe repair. The westbound Salisbury Bypass is open and not impacted by the closure.

“Significant rainfall last weekend created additional erosion under the road. For the safety of the traveling public, we closed both lanes, began immediate repairs and are detouring traffic,” said MDOT SHA District Engineer Jay Meredith.

Motorists are being detoured on US 50 Business through the City of Salisbury, which served as the gateway to beach resorts before completion of the Salisbury Bypass. MDOT SHA is retiming traffic signals on US 50 business to provide additional ‘green’ time to through motorists. Drivers planning to travel to the beach resorts are strongly urged to plan additional travel time.  Overhead message signs will alert motorists to the detour.

So now there is a detour to the detour already in place? Portions of the bypass are already single lane, and have been since last year, then they close down the on ramp to the bypass, and detour the ramp access to the west, then u-turn back onto the bypass to get back to where the ramp was closed. Then is was emergency repairs and one lane closed on the return back from the detour. And now the return from the ramp closure is closed altogether. Use business 50, they say. Well hell, that has construction work on the median being done on it too. I'm almost afraid to ask the question; can they screw up the bypass any worse than they have already? The OC traffic is going to hate it for the rest of the summer and fall, if they weren't hating it already. What a fiasco! Why in the world did they have to plan to do all the road, ramp, overpass repairs at the same time???

What about traffic coming down Rt. 13 from Pennsylvania and Jersey desiring to get on 50 East? Anybody driving a tractor trailer can't get from 13 Southbound onto 50 Eastbound without going through very tiny local streets.

Didn't get the traffic alert by phone today until after 4 P.M.. Had already driven by the same area going west around 3 P.M.. The huge piece of equipment was the first thing we saw sitting sideways straddling the whole of East bound 50. Following that were a couple of surveyors out with equipment and one news van from a local station.

Coming to the end of the bypass the east bound side was all closed off with road blocks. Shocking was the first impression before the realization that this must have been a very serious and rapidly occurring incident. It wasn't enough to block off the on ramp to East 50 but it had to be blocked by heavy equipment and every cross over was blocked as well. Overkill?

I would like to know if the tax dollars (our tax dollars) were awarded to the lowest bidder and the money wasted on poor construction. I have heard that this is the 3rd repair in this one area. I am now wondering if the rest of the bypass (east and west) is safe to travel. Remind me please....how long has it been since the original work was done ...and then tell me how long this type of work is suppose to last. I'm suddenly feeling uncomfortable about taking the rapidly eroding bypass (any part of it).

Can someone please explain if this is all normal wear and tear? Maybe the company that built it in the first place. Who was that? Who approved the hiring?

Heaviest part of tourist season has passed. Colleges re-open this weekend, grade schoolers are getting into the "back to school" shopping and folks are burned out from a lackluster wet summer.

Not to worry, this "emergency project" will be completed in time for Labor Day weekend. Just shows, even newer infrastructure has wear/tear on it and needs repairing once in a while. Now if its the same area needing repair - heads should roll!

The Baltimorons are going to be extremely pissed off when they see how long it's going to take to get through Salisbury this weekend. I bet the backup is going to reach Mardela Springs, maybe longer.
