A Viewer Writes: Wallaby's at the Salisbury Zoo

Maybe the public can help explain why the Wallaby's are kept in an oversize fenced in dog kennel with a concrete floor and their shelter is a plastic dog kennel and a dog house, at the zoo. Is this similar to their natural habitat in the wild?

Photos were taken thru the fence at the back end of the zoo, so I am not sure if this is within public view on the front end. But if it is why hasn't anyone said anything?

Don't we owe animals that we take out of their natural habitat and imprison in zoos the respect to, at the very least - house them in a habitat similar to that of which they are being deprived of?

Publishers Notes: For over a month now the Salisbury Zoo, (through WBOC) have been trying to raise $5,000.00 to repair an exhibit that was damaged when a tree fell onto it. If you'll recall, they lost an Owl and still have yet to recover it.

Nevertheless, since when is the Salisbury Zoo/City not insured?  Could it be that they cannot insure the Zoo because it's 95% in a flood plane zone? More importantly, since WBOC has been asking people to make donations for this repair for an entire month, since the Zoo is holding a fundraiser tonight, could it be they're not exposing just how much they have already raised to exceed the $5,000.00 request?

Finally, how sad is it these days when the beloved Zoo can't raise $5,000.00 overnight. That says a LOT about the staff and condition of the Salisbury Zoo.

Poor excuse

That does NOT justify treating the animals poorly

This zoo is a joke and they need to just shut it down

7:13, You are wrong. The Zoo staff are very well paid.

7:21, the Zoo needs to be relocated. I can assure each and every one of you that MANY animals DIED in the last flood, yet they will LIE to everyone saying they all did fine. That has been their standard response every time. Take the Prairie Dogs, for example. The burrow underground and when it floods they all drown, ALL OF THEM!

The entire Zoo floods out and it is in the worst location in the entire City. They should've relocated it at the old mall property where they already had the infrastructure to put it there.

I'm told everything is now overgrown and the current staff doesn't do any upkeep like they used to in the past. Pretty soon you're going to see more of a petting zoo there with snacks you can put a quarter into to feed the animals because the Salisbury Zoo has become a dump, that's a fact.

Whole park is overgrown. If my grass was as tall as in parts of the park the city would fine me. Recent repairs to the bridge are a joke. Wonder if the Mayor ever crosses Route 13.

Doesn't the zoo already get Millions from the taxpayers?

Its taken two years to remodel the wallaby exhibit. Makes you wonder who's doing the work and their skill level. Zoo staff?

When is the zoo NOT asking for money.
The zoo is like PBS and has desensitized people to their constant money begging.

Knowing it floods, doesn't the zoo's budget have a slush fund for such emergencies?

If they do not have the money to properly care for the facility or the animals then they should close it up and be done with it. If this is what happens over 5K, I can't imagine what will go on with a bigger disaster.

I am glad the owl is free. I am sure it's a better life.

Back to this zoo thing again. Please close that dilapidated zoo and let the animals stay in their natural habitat. This zoo does nothing but flood all the time and put the animals in danger. I know, for a fact, that it floods all the time cause I live right here and see it, ALL THE TIME. So unfair for the animals.

To those of you trying to attack me for publishing something about the Zoo, perhaps I need to come back there and start snapping images again. I have family members who go there regularly and have told me how bad things are there. Let me add, I know there are people there who are just incredible human beings. HOWEVER, there are many more there who are only there for the paycheck, it's been that way for years.

They have been there like that for over 6 month now. its horrible

8:43 AM Sad that people are more concerned about image than the proper treatment of animals.

I submitted the photo and did it because I was appalled that the wallaby's have been in this cage for as long as I have been walking that trail.

They have no appropriate shade from the sun and if you don't think that plastic kennel doesn't heat up like an oven on 90 degree days you are an idiot. Plus it provides little to no shelter from the rain.

Not only is this set up cruel it is an embarrassment. These animals deserve better.

If the zoo didn't have an appropriate habitat for these animals then they shouldn't have taken them in.

The owl that is MIA was seen in Squire Court in Fruitland. The police were notified as well as zoo. The police came out and didn't see it and we never saw zoo staff at all. I guess because we see it just before sun goes down it is after hours for the zoo.

Whole City Park is a dump. Not even safe

9:07 AM Yes it is overgrown and dirty. All they do is cut the grass, no trimming or thinning of the weeds and overgrowth. One mower idiot almost ran us over because he insisted on driving on the walking path, even though he was headed up by the street to mow and could have taken the empty walkway closer to the road. We were perplexed by his ignorance. He was either too stupid or to selfish to realize it was a stone walking path and didn't need mowed. The mower guys are rude and do not take pedestrians into consideration at all. They are a hazard.

There are also homeless people now sleeping in the park. We see them in the morning. Which is sad. I hope they relocate to Halo once the cold weather comes.

No doubt I agree! The zoo is not a place to take friend our family from out of town it's an embarrassment to us all

The older I get, the more it upsets me to see these wonderful creatures of God, being kept in such horrible spaces. There is nothing humane about keeping a wild animal in a cage as small as those at Salisbury's zoo. These animals should be sent to a sanctuary, where they can live out their lives like they should. Or at least, send them to a zoo that has plenty of space.

I'm sure high ups there aren't paid peanuts.
