Perfect attendance means free bikes for Prince George’s middle schoolers

LAUREL, Md. — More than 160 seventh-graders will be starting their summer with new bikes, all thanks to their perfect attendance.

School officials at Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School, in Laurel, said they offered students a free bicycle at the beginning of the year if they maintained perfect attendance for the school year.

At first, they said they were expecting about 60 or 70 bikes would be given out.

But as the year ended, they realized that 166 students had perfect attendance this school year — almost half the class.

“Seventh grade is definitely that adolescent year where we see a lot of struggles,” principal John Mangrum said, adding that making sure students are in class creates a stronger foundation for future growth.

Somewhere in the country there's a man who gives kids with ADHD bikes and ride at lunch on a track at school and they all do so well.

The carrot works better than a stick. Thanks to who ever proposed this. Congrats to those kids who got the bikes! We need more proactive thinkers like that.

This is paid for how? I guarantee you some libby will start hysterically screaming about something

About time the kids that do well get the reward

We got a trip to Busch Gardens, the Aquarium, or something of the like, back when I was a kid for perfect attendance. I had perfect attendance, 4 out of 12 years. Not a bad incentive if the bikes are donated or provided at a discount. Probably less liability and cost, especially, again, if the bikes are donated by retailers, or offered at a discount.

This is not a bad thing. Some might disagree, but this is at least rewarding the children for their dedication and not their educators. How many kids do you think actually make it a full 180 days with no absence? I know class rooms are larger today , but we would charter a bus for about 30 kids from the whole school who were rewarded for their dedication. If I had the choice, I would have rather had the bike.

I think idea this is a winner.

I don't think the libs can argue this one. Over a 50% increase in perfect attendance proves this is a good idea. Also, everyone seems to be getting fatter, kids included. A good way to help with that for the kids.

A win win...I hope!

When I was kid, my parents bought me a bike. To do it, I had to show them that that I got a good report card and help with projects around the home and yard. I had to work for this and not just show up each day to school. As a tax payer I find this offensive! Rewarding them for something they are supposed to do in the first place!!!

My ONLY issue with this is that it means some kids came to school sick, possibly contagious, exposing others to their cold or whatever bug they were carrying. If there isn't already, an exception needs to be made for those who provide medical documentation of an illness. Even our workplaces allow for sick days. Don't encourage parents to send their sick kid to school.

They should be showing up at school anyway! This is why so many of us have dumped public schools! "Positive reinforcement my ass! All this does is teach kids that in life they win prizes just for showing up!

This was a wonderful idea. Whomever came up with this idea truly cares these students. Finally a big named company cares about helping people without taking peoples money.

Some big businesses still care. Tischer Acura has been helping this school feed (lunch) less fortunate students. They have helped families at Thanksgiving by donating Thanksgiving Baskets to less fortunate families, They have helped at Christmas, by donating Christmas toys to less fortunate families. They have helped pay for less fortunate students to attend field trips. They have helped to purchase school supplies and so much more.

Now they are helping the rise of attendance in a Public School.

What have you done to help?

THANKS!!! Tischer Acura for all of your help and support.

Any one who thinks this way, You are an IDIOT. People go to jail for crimes and your tax dollars pay them a salary while they are in jail.

They obtain a degree while in jail and come home to get better jobs than some of you IDIOTS.

The come home from jail looking like Mr. Universe all of this on your TAX DOLLARS.

However you rather pick on a Prince George's County Public School and 166 kids who did a good thing and got rewarded for it.

Now these kids can ride their bikes to school rather than walk, still getting exercise all at the same time. Unlike most of you idiots who think this way and are sitting on your couch becoming a couch potato and eating bon-bons.

Give these kids a break and be happy for a good deed and a great thing that happened to a Prince George's County Public School.

Perfect attendance does not mean the child did well in school. They could have went there every single day and got terrible grades. My bet is a lot of them attended school every day just to get the bike. Meanwhile kids with really good grades are not recognized at all. Make them get good grades, not attend school every day. Lots of them go to school just to hang around with their friends. You people got played big time.

8:47 PM, walking isn't exercise? Attendance isn't anything without good grades. They could have attended school every day and got terrible grades. Reward those work for their grades, not those who went to school just to get a bike. Don't do this next year and watch the attendance go down like crazy. They got played.

you sound like the idiot who questions the learnings of a child that has learning difficulties. Kids face challenges everyday and it's people like you that make them want to give up and not succeed.

we deal with students with all types of issues, and we continue to look for was to bring out the best in a child. it's 1 step at a time. Name 2 POSITIVE things that you have done for a child that you don't even know and that you didn't get paid to do.

Just an FYI for the IDIOT, GOOD GRADES comes with Perfect Attendance. You don't have to make all A's in school. Did you?

Just to set the record straight, PGCPS did not purchase the bikes for these students. This was not even PGCPS's idea, So your tax dollars had nothing to do with this.

It was a major car dealership (Tischer Acura) that stepped in and has been supporting this school, education, these students and their families for over 6 years. what have you done to help?

WHY DON'T YOU JERKS TRY SUPPORTING SOMETHING/SOMEONE other then trying to turn a good thing into a bad thing.

No one got played you dummy. if a child came to school everyday, they learned something regardless as to what you may think.

Kids earning a perfect attendance must report to all classes. A child that is bad, or that don't care about their education is not going to come to school everyday just to get a bike. Now you really sound STUPID. When did you get your GED? Or did you even Graduate?

You sound like you didn't.
