Seattle Mayor plans to combat 'White Privilege' w a Soda Tax

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has made a controversial change to his proposed soda tax, which originally charged two cents per ounce on sugary drinks but was reduced to 1.75 cents per ounce. After critics accused his plan of being racist, Murray added a diet soda tax to his plan on Thursday, an addition that he says will make the tax equal because white people consume diet soda more than people of color.

Murray, a progressive Democrat, first proposed the soda tax in February, estimating that the additional revenue would amount to $16 million in its first year, which he said the city could then put toward a number of things, namely public education for low-income children. Since revising the plan to include diet drinks, Murray said that revenue would increase to $23 million.

He also said the tax would work as a deterrent and force consumers to make healthier choices.

“Healthy kids get better educations and are more likely to have a brighter future,” Murray said.

They are SO slimy.
Its for the children, huh?
It's so he can spend more money.
If he said that, no one would give him the time of day. However, say "it's for the children, for God's sake!!", then opposition is confronted with arguing against helping children.
And MILLIONS of people can't stop cheering this total BS.

Any tax on non-luxury consumer goods is considered to be a "regressive" tax, meaning it hurts low income people more than wealthy because it takes a larger percentage of their income to buy things. Our income tax is "progressive", in contrast, because it taxes more as incomes rise.
So, for this liberal mayor to say that it hurts rich white people MORE than blacks is total BS. The libtards are taking it way too far. If they really want to influence what low income people can't buy, eliminate those items from the SNAP program.
Oh, that's right, you can't get more tax money doing that....my bad! I was thinking like a conservative.

The whole point is to stop the mass consumption of sugar, diet soda has no sugar. Never mind all the other chemicals in it. Lets call it what it is, an anti-sugar obesity prevention tax lol

Taxing sugary drinks aims to lead people towards healthier options. Which means less burden on our healthcare system (or lack thereof) from those who need medical aid due to high blood sugar, obesity, pretty much any condition sprouting from drinking that much sugar

Anybody who uses the term "white privilege" is a racist trying to de-humanize people born with white skin. It's an attempt to deny them civil and human rights just like Hitler did to the Jews.

Who cares really? All you don't seem to care, even though you pose as you do, All I see is a bunch of jaw jacking on a blog with no one putting action behind what they preach... Until you do, keep on complaining becasue that is all you will ever do and that is why nothing will ever change...

And 8:06 AM do you want to know why it gets ridiculous every day? Because people like you let it happen, you let it get to this point and it will go further...

It's just another tax. It goes like this: 1. How much money can we get from the stupid taxpayers without a revolt? 2. What shall we tax? 3. What kind of controversy can we stir up to misguide the suckers..OOPS Taxpayers. What promises can we make (that won't be kept) to satisfy the fence-hangers. ??? Same old BS. It's just another tax.

so they tax soda and soda prices rise. the same companies own most of the healthier juices, so they just raise those prices too, across the board. so everyone is spending more money and buying the same product, just may be not as much.

Being born white has been hard to deal with my entire life. I was always picked last for a job and often couldn't get work because I'm white...I have been in the same job now for a long time and missed two promotions because I'm WHITE.. my SKIN is my SIN... love everyone have a good day.

Before the left tried to demonize hard working citizens "white privledge" was known as the "protestant work ethic". But we don't want lazy, ignorant citizens to feel bad about taking welfare. Oh no, as long as the vote Democrat, we want them to be angry with the hard working citizen paying for their lifestyle.
The left makes me sick.

Ah, isn't what he is trying to do called "Discrimination"?

Sick and tired of this war on white people!
Like the government is trying to do as much as it can to pit one race against another!

It is a tax on the poor and uneducated. Very similar to the tobacco tax. Wealthy educated people make better lifestyle choices than the poor and uneducated. Wealthier people may enjoy a soda now and again but poor people make it a staple of their diet.

Sure 8:33am. You're the one person on here at the front of the movement carrying the flag while the rest of us sit home, right? Jerk-wad. We're in this together. We hang together or they will hang us separately.
