Anglers reply to aquarium’s canyon pledge

Ocean City attorney Mark Cropper fired a shot across the bow of National Aquarium officials this week, following their late December pledge to withdraw their application to designate Baltimore Canyon an urban marine sanctuary if no common ground could be established between the aquarium and local opponents of its protectionist efforts.

In a Jan. 5 letter to National Aquarium CEO John Racanelli, Cropper, who represents numerous local marinas and the Ocean City Marlin Club, said the aquarium should make good on that promise because the common ground he seeks does not exist.

“It is clear that the local community in and around Ocean City, Maryland is not supportive of this endeavor by the aquarium, nor will it ever be,” he wrote.

Cropper included in his correspondence to Racanelli copies of letters of opposition from the Town of Ocean City to Gov. Larry Hogan and a similar letter from the Worcester County Commissioners to Hogan and the county’s delegation to the Maryland General Assembly.

Also enclosed in the packet was a copy of a letter from seven members of congress, including Rep. Andy Harris (R-1st), to the administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Kathryn D. Sullivan.

Rich white people problems. Oh my, they might stop me from harvesting billfish that the majority of anglers regard as catch and release only. Let's spend $50,000 going out and dragging dead fish in to be weighted so we can claim to be the best fisherman. I Hope the entire fishing tournament circuit gets shut down. It was a small group of fisherman that respected the sport but has now turned into who can spend the most money for bragging rights. The number of tournaments has exploded and there are multimillion dollar boats that cruise from the US to Bahamas to Central America. Look at us we landed 30 - 40 - 50 or more billfish in a day. Every species of marlin is hunted down. Fish get tail wrapped and a killed because they drag them in backwards.

Makes me sick as a sport fisherman to see this. It is not like deer hunting where the population needs to be controlled. OC has been fueling the tournaments for purely economic gain. These tournaments bring in people with real money and they spend it unlike the average tourists on vacation.

and? nobody worries about greed destroying the bay or our local environment? get over it! banning anyone from fishing is a joke. next they'll push the boundaries closer and closer until you aint allowed to even go in the water!
it's called scope creep and happens with every government agency and program!
you think they'll stop at some imaginary line?
