State investigates OCPD involved fatal crash

Accident in May took life of pedestrian after being hit by marked police vehicle

The Ocean City Police Department officials say they are confident that the three-month-long investigation into the officer-involved crash that killed a man will be coming to a close soon, and that they will take whatever next step is required.

On May 5, 67-year-old Jeffrey Yale Delong was struck and killed by a patrol car driven by an on-duty officer. Delong was crossing Coastal Highway east to west around 94th Street with two other pedestrians against the signal light when he was hit by a marked police Chevy Tahoe. Five-year veteran Officer Xeniya Patterson was operating the vehicle.

Shortly after the incident, city officials said Patterson was placed on administrative leave. She returned to active duty on May 8.

“Her mental state was taken [into] consideration before she returned, but we cannot take disciplinary actions that are necessary until an internal review is complete,” Police Public Affairs Specialist Lindsay Richard said. “And we are not able to complete the review until we get the results from Maryland State Police, which will be soon.”

Coastal Hwy was being repaved at the time and one whole side of the crosswalk was unpainted. The Town turns its back on these things like the trip hazards at the crossings on Baltimore Ave and Division.

Regardless of the pavement! This cop is known for poor driving and high rate of speeds! Hope they dig deep and slap a huge suit on all of em! The Town to the cop!
