Low-cost Internet access provided in Pocomoke City

Pocomoke City residents in public housing, Housing Choice Voucher and multifamily programs might benefit from a recent expansion of Comcast’s Internet Essentials program.

Announced by City Manager/City Attorney Ernie Crofoot at last week’s regular council meeting, the town was invited to participate as an existing partner in the program.

Those interested in using the service need to fill out an application either over the phone or online at www.internetessentials.com. Eligible families, according to the website, must have at least one child who qualifies for the National School Lunch Program, have no outstanding debt to Comcast that is less than one-year old and have not subscribed to Comcast Internet within the last 90 days. Families with debt to Comcast that is more than one-year old may still be eligible, according to the website.

Other terms and conditions apply, according to the provider.

Once qualified and accepted by the company, users will be charged $9.95 per month plus tax for 10 Megabit per second speeds, with no credit check, no term contract, no installation fee and in-home Wi-Fi, according to the program.

Applicants might also be eligible for a low-cost computer in order to access the service. According to the site, both desktop and laptop computer options are available at a cost of $149.99 plus tax.

Great I pay comcast $75 for Internet and the guy who sits around all day gets it for $10 and a special deal on a laptop. And people wonder why we are voting for Trump! This madness must stop. When I was young welfare only covered the basics and you were embarrassed to have to use it. Now it seems there is no shame in the game.

It is sad how true this statement is.

It's really sad that most commenters want to assume that EVERYONE living in subsidized housing sits around and does nothing with their lives. There are MANY good, hard working people who live in subsidized housing.

It is so sad and ignorant at the same time to see so many people assume that just because a family lives in subsidized housing, they sit around and do nothing all day. There are MANY good, hard working people who live in these types of apartments, but with a shunning attitude like that, you will never know and continue to stay blind and ignorant.

I object to not being included in this program. What's good for one should be good for all.

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."
