This may make a lot of Veterans angry, and I truly respect all who volunteer to join in the defense of out Country, but I was 14 in 1968, and was truly against the Viet Nam not a war but a "Police Action". Nothing about it made any sense regarding protecting America.

I completely agree.
Today's overwhelmingly PC atmosphere would never give the other side of Ali's refusal to be drafted.
I thought then - and still feel strongly - that he refused because of his rise to fame, and the moiney that came with it, at that time.
Did he offer to be drafted and participate in a non-combat position in the service? No.
He blatantly refused to serve his country in any capacity.
Elvis had MUCH more to lose at that time by sitting out (in the Army) two years of a skyrocketing career, but still observed the draft and served.
That act by Elvis probably did more for the Army than anything else at that time.
Ali's refusal sparked an entire generation - especially young Black men - into thinking that they too could refuse service to their country.
While not even near the degree of Hanoi Jane, he's still on the list. It's why he's never been anywhere near a hero to me.
(Yes, I'm a Vietnam-era Veteran.)

I'm a Vet - from that era - and what you wrote certainly does not make me angry.
But when your country calls - you go. You can be a CO and still serve. Nobody likes war. Nobody wants to see our compatriots being killed.
You can still disagree with our leaders, not mindlessly go along with what you may sincerely perceive as a wrong policy, and still serve.
Cassius Clay did not.

Different time, different place, different race. I won't criticize either one of these men for the choices they made. I think I understand both.

@6:36 other than beating back The very Communist forces and ideals you see decimating the world and America today.
Educate yourself man! It was the "Democrat" peace nicks that instigated all the anti-war fever. Communist propagandists like Obama's mentor Frank Marshall Davis were leading the anti war movements because they wanted to advance their agenda and support of Communism. They used Alisnky tactics to prey on bleeding heart sissy liberals to act as surrogates fighting for peace when in reality the aim was to stop fighting the Communists. Fools.
Now look where we are.
How ironic Ali converted to Islam to avoid fighting but fought for a living.
It seems Islam is popular for COWARDICE.

Muhammad Ali stood for what he believed and who are any of us to judge him. I be darned if I want my son and/or daughter going to war on some bs just to show that he/she is patriotic. You cant even trust their motive for sending you Why aren't your presidents, congress men and other political figures lining up and signing up to defend their country? I respect those who served and and i feel for those who did and came back to be treated like 3rd class citizens and did not get the help they so needed and deserved. Blacks were treated maliciously during those times. Why fight for a country during that time where someone would quite possibly hang you in the same uniform you wore protecting their race hating a$$3$.

It's amazing who gets a hero's send off in this country. Men served and died in his place. He was an excellent athlete people - that is all.

I really thought that in the late 1960s everyone began to realize that the US Government was corrupt and lying to the American people. That was the meaning of the protests.

Why would anyone (especially a Vet) encourage any young man to shave his head and murder for this evil corrupt government?

Please answer that question folks. Wake up.

The Vietnam war was fought over the gold beneath their feet. Pure and simple. Vietnam sits on the largest known reserves of gold outside Zimbabwe. It wasn't about freedom or halting the spread of communism. It was like all wars, about greed and control.

As I recently told my nephew having trouble resolving the crap he saw going on, with having served honorably in Iraq: The politics, corruption and the bankers do not necessarily affect the honor of your service. Unless you let them.

This is so incorrect. He was not "just an athlete", he was an athlete who used his platform for the greater good. I could not agree more with his belief in avoiding the draft. Why? Why should he have flown to a foreign country when African Americans were already fighting a battle right here in the United States? Ali was a great champion, but his greatest quality was that of galvanizing those who he fought for. It is no secret how badly people of his race were treated in this country during his prime years. He used his fame to oppose oppression and to fight to make this a better country. So although he did not serve his country in battle, he served this country in a way that few have been able to. This is why he was praised, not just because he was a great athlete.

Today's media has given Muhammed Ali so much coverage as if he was a legend and a hero.

Today's younger generation now believe that he is a true American hero and it shows their stupidity.

Cassius Clay hated America, he hated white people, He joined the Nation of Islam and hated christians. You idiots who are defending him need to go to jail with him.

The liberal Supreme Court let him off and that was the start of Liberal Corruption in this country. He should have been taken out back and shot or hung. He is lower than whale sh!t.
