Regal movie theaters begin bag-search policy

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — The next time you plan to see the newest blockbuster on the big screen, you might want to leave a little early. If the movie theater is owned by Regal Entertainment Group, you’ll probably be subject to a bag check.

“All they did was open and look. They didn’t actually go through it,” said movie-goer Jay Weinisch. He and his wife Dawn first noticed the new policy earlier this month.

“Two weeks ago we were here. I was surprised, but, it was perfectly fine with me.” said Dawn Weinisch outside the Regal Columbus Stadium 12 at Town Center in Virginia Beach. “I thought they were looking for the water bottle and they were going to take it away!”

If someone is going to shoot up a theater, they don't need a backpack to bring in a weapon. There's a reason it's called concealed carry.

They're probably using it as an excuse to catch people bringing in their own drinks.

the last guy that shot up a theater brought it under his coat. he didn't have a bag, it was on his person. I commend them for doing something, its just sad that there is "something" that HAS to be done.

They want to make sure you don't bring in any snacks as well so you will be forced to by their overpriced stuff!

We're watching the demise of movie theaters as we know them. What a shame.

That is why I don't go to movies, sporting events.

They won't search me.

I would like to see metal detectors placed and used at all movie theatres, malls and casinos.

To 12:14 PM. The only reason they won't search you is you don't go to the movies tough guy.

I want to set up a kiosk in the lobby and rent handguns. Even up the odds a bit!

People who voluntarily give up rights to see a movie or watch a game are fools.

1:50 You're right, as long as they have stupid policies like that, I won't go to the movies.

Movie theaters are for adolescents and people that don't drink.

Movie theaters are for teens that don't have a car to have sex at, I see it every time I go.

I think it is just a way for them to make sure you are not taking any snacks or drink in with you. They think if they say it is for security people won't get upset.

Definitely to keep out snacks and drinks. That is where they make all their money.
I remember a car salesman that I worked with had a customer say that he was a thief because they tried to sell him a Hyundai Accent at full sticker. He remembered that the man said his daughter worked at a movie theater. He reached into his desk, grabbed a bag of microwave popcorn said "This car that I'm selling you only has $100 dollars mark up(true), this popcorn just cost me $0.25 in the snack machine but your daughter would sell it for $8. Do you really want to call me a thief?"

Bring in a backpack full of large, anatomically correct "marital aids" for them to find.

I hear TSA agents love it. But at least movie theater employees won't get to grope you.

@9:37 - No way a business is going to sell a hyundai accent at full sticker just to make $100. You cant run a business on margins less than 1%.

You won't watch movie

Good luck with that

Actually, they can, technically.

Ever hear of "dealer holdback"? It's a percentage of the cost, paid to the dealer by the manufacturer, usually on a quarterly basis.

It wasn't even 5 PM when my movie ended on Fri evening 8/21 and the SPD was already inside patrolling the theaters. They are just doing their job,but sad that it had come to this.
