Two teens mauled in separate shark attacks at North Carolina beach

OAK ISLAND, N.C. (ABC News) - Two teenagers were mauled in separate shark attacks on the same stretch of North Carolina beach today, both suffering life-threatening injuries, local officials said.

A 13-year-old girl lost a part of her arm when she was bitten by a shark in an attack that occurred around 4:40 p.m. in Oak Island, a town about 30 miles south of Wilmington, according to Brunswick County officials.

The girl lost part of her left arm and may lose her left leg, Oak Island Mayor Betty Wallace said in a Facebook post.

Just over an hour later, EMS received a call that a 16-year-old boy was attacked on beach roughly two miles from where the girl was attacked, and Wallace said he may have lost his arm.

Swim in the ocean and you are in the lower part of the food chain, not at the top as you are on land.

It amazes me that seagulls sit on the water in flocks here. I lived in the FlaKeys 13 years, and NEVER saw this because of the sharks? Barracuda? Who knows, but it doesn't happen down there!

6:49 PM sharks are not worthless. The apex predators help keep the oceans filtered by eating other fish on the food chain. Sharks are in their environment. When people step into any ocean, we enter their world and do so at our own risk. You can not blame the shark for biting a person because the shark thinks it's a fish something they eat. Almost all attacks are the result of mistaken identity.

As food sources disappear because of over-fishing, and the health of the world's oceans, more fish are coming closer to the shore lines in search of food and not stalking people to eat them.

Sharks are beautiful in their natural environment. They are intelligent and even playful. Try to look beyond your own fear and understand GOD created them as HE did you and each are worthy.

Sharks won't attack in OC. Blood alcohol levels are too high, it would make them sick.
