A Message From A Friend In Va. Beach

The City of Virginia Beach regularly sprays synthetic pyrethroides in our neighborhoods to kill mosquito's. These same chemicals are TOXIC to bees. The chemicals are mixed in a light oil and sprayed into the air as the trucks drive in our neighborhoods. The oil causes the chemicals to stick to plants. When bees come into contact with the plant or flower, the chemical kills them by attacking their nervous system.

But...you can have your property "RED FLAGGED". When the spray truck sees the red circle (issued by the city) on your mail box, they will turn off the spray until they have passed.

To "RED FLAG" your property, call (757) 385-1470.
Any questions or comments can be directed to Phil Meekins: pmeekins@vbgov.com

I emailed Phil last night and had a response first thing this morning!

Have your yard "red flagged" for the sake of the bees! After all, this is National Pollinator Week!

Pyrethrins are naturally occurring chemicals found in chrysanthemums, and have been a primary ingredient in pesticides and bug repellents for many years.

So mums ought to be banned now too?
