William Shatner defends missing Leonard Nimoy's funeral

William Shatner has come in for harsh criticism for missing the funeral of his Star Trek co-star Leonard Nimoy on Sunday.

The 83-year-old star, who played Captain Kirk in the original 1960s TV series, was unable to attend the Los Angeles ceremony on Sunday morning, which started to hours before he flew home from a pre-scheduled charity event in Florida.

But despite tweeting tributes to Nimoy, and explaining that his two daughters were attending the memorial, Shatner became the target of social media trolls who slammed his absence.

'Lame excuse. Man up,' one Twitter user wrote.

So he spent the day helping people in need, people who are alive and suffering.

Leonard is dead, RIP. Mr. Shatner's presence cannot cure that.

We all know he wanted to be there, and was in spirit.

Leave the man alone.

People forget that Shatner is well over 80, too, and a whirlwind trip from a charity fundraiser to a funeral the next day may have been seriously hard on his health.

He and Nimoy had a relationship for many years, mainly due to Nimoy's humanity in being able to deal with Shatner's flawed personality.

Shatner chose to honor a living obligation. Frankly, I think that's exactly what Nimoy would have wanted him to do. People are making a ridiculous deal out of this and I truly believe this is not what Nimoy would have wanted.

He honored Nimoy by doing charity work.... Exactly what he would have wanted.
