Setting Wicomico's Employment Record Straight - 19 Consecutive Monthly Declines in Labor Force

As most of SBYnews readers know - our news organization continues to publish the jobs statistics for Wicomico County.  We have done so for many years.  For the record - Wicomico County began to experience significant reductions in our areas workforce in January 2011.  Since then - Wicomico County has experienced 19 consecutive monthly declines in our local area workforce, and, the County has experienced a decline in 26 of the past 32 months.  Folks - we are not making this stuff up - these numbers have been provided by the US Bureau of Labor statistics.  Moreover, our organization has researched the filings of our local State income tax returns and noticed that there was a significant increase in the number
non taxable returns - due to a decline in our residents wages.
You see - one is not even required to file a State income tax return if his or her wages fall below certain income thresholds established by our legislature.  Bottom line - these numbers indicate a deterioration in our local economy.  When one factors in Wicomico's population growth - estimated to be about 1% per year - it indicates that there is a severe economic problem.  Yet the Democratic party in power alludes to a much 'rosier' economic condition.

Therefore - our staff implores you to investigate the numbers yourself, including, researching of the number of factory closings, foreclosures, poverty rate, and, increases in fees and taxes.

As Ronald Reagan said just 1 week before the election to ask yourself;

'Are you better off than you were 4 years ago, is it easier for you to go and buy things in the store than it was 4 years ago, is there more or less unemployment in the Country than there was 4 years ago . . . . '

If the answers to those questions are no - then November 4th will be the time to send a -'shot across the bow' - for you to decide an alternative.  We hope that you the voters will make the right decision in trying to restore some sanity to insane system.

Sad to say, but I'm poorer than I've ever been. Where is the good news in the economy we keep hearing about on TV? It's surely not on the Eastern Shore.

The year 2014 - is the year of lost opportunity. There simply are no decent jobs around here anymore.

This is the worst economy that I have seen in my lifetime. Abandoned homes are everywhere. And one had better not leave their home unlocked.

The Daily Litter Box Liner has recently Laura Mitchell and Josh Hastings over the more qualified John Cannon and Larry Dodd. Wicomico County is circling the drain right now and this County will be in the sewer if those two get elect.

All Republicans, good Democrats and Independents need to get out and vote for John Cannon and Larry Dodd over those two liberal tree huggers. This County will never recover if the liberal majority take over the County Council.

Please get out and vote Republican

The only jobs around here are panhandling, begging, subsidized housing, and drug dealing. Besides that, what other economy do we have.

IMHO the Democratic party waited far to long to ignore the local economic conditions. Pollitt & Conway focused on the wrong things at the wrong times. Instead, they should have focused on trying to improve the local economy. This could cost both of them the election.

The numbers tend to show that our county is going ass backwards. The employment numbers are terrible.

Responding to 6:20 poster - I agree.
Instead of concentrating on spending they should have been looking for legitimate revenue enhancers - like employing people to work. Somehow I believe that the word - WORK - or EMPLOYMENT - is not included in their vocabulary.

I overheard NAACP Mary Shanti say that in Wicomico nearly 1 in 5 are living below poverty. In my estimation there are grounds enough to classify this as an economic emergency.

It's a good thing we still have freedom of the press otherwise all of this information would have swept under the rug.

On the entire Eastern Shore, who is to blame? could go to either county in the tri county area, or sussex in Delaware, but jobs (good jobs no part-time minimum wage) I am a 55 year old female who was laid off from my last job, with 30 years of experience, but can't find a comparable job...I am working, but not at a livable wage. I fully expect you to post my comment and for your regular poster to flame me. That's what they do.

And if they flame me for my previous comment...they can't make feel any worse about my situation than I do...

It's really hard to argue with any of the above posters. The employment numbers clearly show that there is a severe employment problem. I think Wicomico is feeling the brunt even more than other areas of the country because the officials took draconian measures like implementing high impact fees, raising taxes, bridge tolls, sales taxes, flush taxes, local income taxes. Basically - they shot themselves in the foot. These events could very well cost all of the Democratic leaders their jobs, and rightfully so.

I think even democratic operatives James Carville and Kirsten Powers would agree with the last poster. The local economy - really is a perfect storm.

I think it's from all the officers duncan has been forcing out of Spd.

To 8:30 Posting about what caused the economic mess.

My reply - add another one, Tier Maps. The admin expended an exorbitant amount of time which would have been better spent in trying to promote a viable economy instead of stifling it.

Thanks to Ireton, Conway, Mathias and other assorted liberal scum.
